Yeah, pretty much.  The coach will have to send a Letter of Intent to be signed by player and parent.  This is a legal document that specifies the scholarship monies the school is obligated to "pay".  At that point the student is formally committed to the school.  Should he decide to go elsewhere he will not be able to participate in NJCAA sports for one year unless the player/student obtains a release from the school.

 

Not sure of NJCAA has the same schedule as NCAA when it comes to early and late signing dates.

 

My son played JuCo for two years (is now at a D2 on a scholarship) but didn't "sign" until June of his senior year.

After my son and the coach shook hands he said I will see you in January. It just seems like there should be something more binding than a handshake in this day and time. It is also funny to me how the schools that previously had no money all of a sudden wanted to match the offer from the school my son committed to.
