I have listened to a tons of speakers and have read a few books in my time, but maybe I am not paying close enough attention. My team lacks that edge, spunk or s******ness. How do you coach that? Can you coach that? I love that Coach Corbin(vandy) does stats during his fall for offensive and defensive categories, but at the highschool levels not many people have the ability to have an asst. or team managers, let alone the player numbers to have scrimmages in the fall due to other sport commitments. Our practices during the fall consist of mon/fri long toss program similar to jaegar. tues/thurs games. fri/light bp/mass fungo. Everyday with the exception of tues/thurs. we have conditioning. Mon/usually speed related/wed,plyos,baseball specific fri/distance. Any ideas would be appreciated. Frustrated coach!

I have done the following to add energy into the fall program. Obviously the numbers would be different depending on the numbers you have. Have returning seniors be captains and have a draft privately where they draft all of the fall players you have. Everyday then becomes a competition. End of the week we reward winning team Gatorades and at the end of our fall session we give out award and then the winning team gets a pizza party. We even allow the captain to trade players based on the approval of myself. If you want me to help tailor this exactly to your program or you want a more in depth over view send me a PM. THIS WORKS VERY WELL.
Everything we do is done with competition. Every drill , every conditioning drill etc etc. There is always something on the line. The players enjoy the competition and work much harder. The intensity of the workouts is very high to say the least and is driven by their desire to win.

For instance every med ball routine is timed and the reps are counted. There is a chart with the most done in a certain amount of time and they only count if performed in the proper manner. If you want to see the difference just do it without competition and then add competition.

When we take infield we chart errors vs attempts. The 3b vs 3b and group one vs group two etc. The focus is much greater and the attention to detail and instruction always goes up. I believe that there needs to be something on the line to not only challenge them to compete but to make it fun and excited at all times.

I keep a notebook with the all time % leaders , all time records etc. It becomes a big deal when one is broken and a kid gets his name in the book.
