I have been reading all these post and boy the recruiting process is a long road.

I am simply seeking advice from others who have maybe been in a simular spot.

My son an 09 players is above avg player in his reg. We play AAAA baseball. He was selected as All Region 1st base as well as player of the yr runner-up. In our 28 game season he lead team in avg. and HR's. No errors at 1st all season (coach announced this at end of season). He has the skill to play DI/D2 but here is our problem. I am in no way boosting just listing the facts that he could play skill wise for many schools.

He was scheduled to be in the Perfect Game Top Prospects SC and also another very good local one here in GA. He pulled a hamstring in the 3rd game of his fall season, was 7 for 8 at that point. He will not be able to attend any workouts or showcases for the rest of the fall. It has been two weeks now and he is just starting to fill a little better.

He has had one DI Georgia school contact him a few weeks ago. They were to see him in the PG showcase as well as wanting to see some of his fall games.

Being that he is hurt this all did not happen. I am thinking that we will just go into the season starting in Feb and hope someone still has a need for his skills/position. He thinks he might like to go to a JUCO to start with for several reasons. First grades 2.9 to 3.0 GPA but good sat score. Also if he goes to a JUCO he thinks he will have a better chance of playing his 1st yr. I like the idea of a smaller school possibly JUCO to see if he is really serious about the commitment required to play at the next level. Keeping his grades up and being able to play at the same time. I have been told by several parents/coaches who played college baseball that baseball is one of the hardest sports to play and keep grades up as they have so many games and travel alot missing a lot of class.

Does this seem like a good plan as he will not be able to sign now this fall. I would think some of the smaller schools and JUCO may have more to offer later that the big programs. Is just sitting back and letting it all unfold this coming spring taking to big of a chance of him not being found? Anyone having any experence with this kind of problem please reply.

Cougars Fan,
Since he was not injured until the 3rd game of the fall season, that left a lot of time PRIOR to his injury for recruiting activity. Had he had garnered any solid interest or offers prior to the injury?

I think I would remain proactive initiating college contacts and reset the calendar with physical activity resuming when he becomes able ---- say around Christmas or sooner. I would assume he would be able to throw and hit fairly soon and being a firstbaseman I wouldn't think his inability to showcase his speed (because of his hamstring) would impact his ability to be recruited at 1st base. (talk to the coaches about that)
Cougarsfan,
Have never been in the same situation, but I think that if we were I would suggest to son that he do all he can to get better for spring and concentrate on the GPA, which, may make the difference in the spring.
I am not sure what you are worried about, he has expressed his desire to attend JUCO because of grades and chance to get more playing time. I don't see what is wrong with that option and it seems like this is what HE would like to do.
JMO.
CougarsFan,
Like TPM said if you son wants a JUCO then maybe he knows best.My son last minute decided on a JC. I wasnt really for it at first but now I am really happy he is there. Most the boys are at least 2 years older than him as many redshirted at the JC a year for many diff. reasons. I cant imagine unless you are a complete stud how you could compete with guys 3-4-5 years older than you. my sons Jc scrimmaged against another team yesterday. Only 4 freshmen were invited from the 60 plus guys on the fall roster. My son was one of them. He played a lot and did very well. This is a nationally ranked JC. There are a couple guys that are from D1 schools. They are pretty good and they came back for whatever reasons do not know yet.
In your first post when you mentioned a juco you alomost seemed aplogetic about it dont be, its a very good option for a lot of boys and my son is very happy with his decision.
many boys are very academic from members on this board and attend very academic schools and my hats off to them. My son is a good student but needs to learn to manage his time a little better. so far so good and its just not as bad a s many parents seem to think it is. even outside of baseball a lot of parents act like a JC is a last resort, its not. With the economy the way it is and people having financial difficulties i think you will see more families head in that direction. Its been good for us my son got a scholarship from american legion that covered all his costs and its enabling us to get some things put together so we can send him to a four year school after he finishes at the jc.
good luck with your son, let that hamstring really rest they tend to lnger and come back.
