I had the pleasure of meeting in person another hsbaseball web connection, Cabbagedad's son Alex, head coach of the Covington Lumberjacks in the Valley Baseball League.  Alex comes across as just an outstanding guy, the kind you'd be glad to have watch over and coach your son and I had a great time talking with him. And while Cabbagedad (Pete) would be too modest to post it, he has Covington with the best record in the VBL, a team that finished last a year ago.  Now he isn't perfect-he came 2 hours to our field and inhospitably beat us in extra  innings in a wonderful game for fans (not so much for a team president), but most importantly, Covington had a good sized group of fans that traveled to see the game, something I've not seen previously. Alex has his town and his players excited about the team and that's just great.  We talked about this web site and all of the connections and friendships that have developed. You just can't beat good baseball people.     Pete has raised himself up one fine son.   One problem-his cleanup hitting slugger is from my school, Virginia Tech-who brings a slugging Hokie to whack balls all over the place at my park? Thanks for the kind words, Hokie (and others!).  Of course, we are all proud of our kids, even when they aren't kids anymore.  It is particularly rewarding and touching to hear things that suggest they are good people.  Alex was very appreciative that you took the time to introduce yourself.

I totally agree - "You just can't beat good baseball people."  And this place has been a special connection to lots of those.

Thanks again, Hokie... son's team continued to play well and clinched the Southern Division last night.  The player that Hokie mentioned continued to mash and the team really stuck together and played well all year.

Of course, I am very happy for son's success.  But more so, I was very proud and impressed by the way he and his friend (uhh.., I mean asst coach) were able to navigate the challenges of college summer ball so well and have a team of guys coming out the other end still fully bought in and being a team.

The assistant coach was the pitching coach - managing that heavy schedule with probably more than their share of lost arms (due to various limitations) was really something to follow.  He did an amazing job... has a bright future in front of him.

Son said that Hokie's team was really strong and just had one of those years when the ball didn't bounce their way... will likely just miss playoffs but he was definitely impressed by their team and organization.
