Just read on BA that Ryan Zink has used the medical redshirt year to the maximum.
BA considers him the #1 draft prospect in the Horizon conference and also notes that he has added 20 lbs with the conditioning during his recovery. Is now 6'5" and 230lbs.
Didn't say it but he probably releases the ball from about 54 feet at 94mph with that physical stature.

Here is hoping for a great 2007 for Ryan, including a wonderful day in June that he worked very heard to have happen.

'You don't have to be a great player to play in the major leagues, you've got to be a good one every day.'

What size of water ski do you suppose he'll need now...two full sheets of plywood...one for each foot?

I think he's been banned from all low lying flood plaines due to the water he displaces.

Regardless of what shakes out this year I am more proud that he has taken the initative on his own to make the most of a bad situation. There's a ton of guys with baseball potential but character is built from within, there's no set value on it, and it carries forwrd throughout life.

Thanks all for the kudos

Ryan is throwing well now but I don't think his coach is in any hurry to put him on the bump and I doubt he will even be making the first couple trips. Coach Dee said "I don't want to be tempted by seeing you sitting at the end of the bench staring at me with your glove on". I give Coach Dee a lot of credit for respecting Ryan's potential versus the teams "real time" needs.

Congratulations to rz1's off-spring! Many are called but few are chosen. Those who endure the trials and tribulations that life dishes out will be rewarded such as in the case of Ryan. Wow!! What a story! Is he really back uo to 94MPH already? Only hard work and dedication in physical therapy and conditioning can make this comeback possible. That says a lot for your genes RZ and speaks volumes for the Mrs. too Smile Olympic skiers and professional prospects. A very good combination to have in one household. Will look forward to watching his progress rz. peace, shep
Shep,

I think Infielddad took some "artistic liberty" with the 94mph figure. Ryan is 10 months out surgery and while he hasn't said how hard he is throwing, I've heard he is more than "handling his own" during his cage work. The big thing he has increased his strength and flexibility in all areas in the last 10 months. It is a step by step adventure.

As far as the olympic skiers, my daughters are pretty good, but not that good. The rz1 gene is a concern of my wife and will be verified when the blood tests come back. When dealing with me she often feels there had to be a mixup in the nursery.

rz1, I was looking at velocity from a hitters perspective...with me being that possible hitter.

So let's see, we have a pitcher who is 6'5", weighs 230, due to his off season condition, dedication and hard work he has "filled out" his muscle mass, as BA suggested, and has a release point that is at about 55'or 56' or so.
Yup, that pretty much looks like 94mph to me!!!

THIS PITCH. There is nothing in the past, no award, no all-conference team, no success or failure that will control THIS PITCH. Every at-bat, every pitch. Whether on the mound or in the batters box, you have the chance to make a bad sequence good or vice-versa. Anytime you can put the idea of THIS PITCH to the forefront of your focus, you’ll always have the best chance to succeed.

An awesome perspective.......
