Preview: Connie Mack World Series Qualifier

TROY - Twenty baseball teams – including squads from up and down the eastern half of the United States - have entered, but only one will leave the Collar City with an automatic berth to the Connie Mack World Series.

Beginning at 9 a.m. today, the South Troy Dodgers organization will yet again play host to an American Amateur Baseball Congress World Series qualifier, with four fields around the Capital Region serving as pool play sites. After three days of pool play, a double elimination tournament begins with the remaining six teams. The last team standing clinches an automatic berth into the Connie Mack World Series, to be played August 6-13 in Farmington, N.M.

The South Troy Dodgers’ 18-and-under team hosts a pool at Geer Field in Troy, while the Dodgers’ 17-and-under unit will entertain four other teams on The College of Saint Rose’s Bob Bellizzi Field in Albany. The South Colonie Raiders will play at South Colonie High School and the Clifton Park Yankees will compete at Clifton Common.

Some of the area’s best young baseball players will battle for the local teams, but this tournament routinely draws future professional-quality talent as well.

The Florida Legends, three-time defending champions, had 14 players selected in the 2010 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. Some of those players have signed contracts and are currently playing minor league baseball, although shortstop Manny Machado, picked third overall by the Baltimore Orioles, is still unsigned and has committed to Florida International University.

Two years ago, Ryan Westmoreland, a fifth round draft pick by the Boston Red Sox in the 2008 draft, stunned the South Troy Dodgers 17-and-under squad as a member of the Bayside Yankees, hitting three home runs in a game at Bleecker Stadium in Albany. He later became a New York-Penn League All-Star for the Red Sox affiliate in Lowell and played short season Class A games at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, a hop, skip and a jump from Geer Field.

Other contenders this year include the Cincy Flames, from Cincinnati, Ohio, which had three current players selected in the 2010 draft.

The Frozen Ropes Titans, from McKinney, Texas, had the longest trip to Troy. According to team coaches at Wednesday’s registration meeting at the Hilton Garden Inn, after playing a doubleheader Tuesday, the team headed to the Dallas airport at 4:30 a.m. and endured layovers in New Orleans and Tampa before arriving in Albany.

The rest of the field is filled out with teams from the New York City metro area, New Jersey, Connecticut and Michigan.

Dave Roseboom, a graduate of La Salle Institute, was the only local player in the tournament who was selected in the Major League Draft. South Troy’s hard-throwing lefthander was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the 1,433 pick in the 47th round.

South Colonie features a young team led by pitchers Chris Kalica and Chris Kearney – rising seniors both at Colonie High School. An experienced team in years past, Ed Kelly’s squad is youthful, but hopeful they can compete.

This week’s tournament is one of two open qualifiers in the nation, as the western version was played in Phoenix in late June. The Dodgers will also host the North Atlantic Regional in Troy July 22 to 25. The winner of that tournament, which is reserved for area champions from the northeast, also secures a berth in the Connie Mack World Series.

The South Troy Dodgers, The City of Troy, and AABC Baseball were embarrassed by the umpiring today at Greer Field. The gentleman behind the plate was an absolute embarrassment. South Troy knows it, the fans know it, the scouts in attendence know it, yet it is condoned; why? These boys have worked too hard and this tourney means too much to allow this level of incompetence. It is an embarrassing disgrace to the City of Troy and the South Troy organization and if the South Troy organization or AABC do not do anything about it, they too join in the embarrassment of condoning such unbelievable incompetence

Of more concern tome than the umpiring would be the number of teams who forfeited on Saturday---yes there was a rain condition but we played our 9 AM game at 2 PM---we could have packed up and left but we went and had a hearty brunch and returned to play in the afternoon.

I don't understand the forfeits--you are there to play a tournament with title competition on Sunday

Why are you not playing on Saturday even with the delays?

Incidently we had no umpire problems in any of our games at South Colonie HS

Cancelled by the Tourney Director? That seems a bit unfair. Doesn't that create an advantage to the teams advancing having had to throw 7 less innings?

Why did the Mudhens not get in? Did they leave?

We also has no problems at Clifton Park or a St. Rose with umpires, just South Troy, same ump, two days in a row.

Trying not to be dispectful but he is past his prime and someone need to do something about it, It was worse than horrible!

I do not know what your problem is--I assume you have a relationship with the Texas Team which if Iread the scores correctly were 4-0 after pool play

Umpires diodn't seem to hurt you too much

Just because you win doesn't mean you had a competent ump; you seem well connected in these parts, ask around, and you'll find out how bad it was......Peace out

The South Troy Dodgers were in the driver's seat heading into Monday's action in the Connie Mack World Series qualifier as the only team remaining without a loss.

By Monday evening, the Dodgers had been eliminated.

The Cincy Flames defeated South Troy 2-0 in the 12 innings in the day's first game.

In the second, the Richmond County Baseball Club posted an 8-3 decision over the Dodgers, squeezing them out of the elimination round.

Action continues Tuesday, the final day in the qualifier. Cincy will play the Florida Legends at 9 a.m. Richmond County awaits the winner of that game in the championship clash, which will begin at Noon. Both games will be played at Geer Field in Troy.

The Florida Legends eliminated the Frozen Ropes Titans in the morning, a 3-0 victory.
My son's team, NE Mudhens left on their own even though they were told they would be one of the wild card teams. Due to rain they were told they would not play playoff game on Saturday and probably one on Sunday and the playoffs would go deep into Monday.

Many of the team's players had commitments (our son had to go to his college orientation in Maryland) etc so the team voted to give their playoff spot to another team. Unfortunately the team had been in Georgia for the two weeks prior so being on the road for almost three weeks probably weighted heavily in their decision to leave. We were not asked to forfeit.

The only negative I had with the tournament is the pool play should have been done on Friday. If you made the playoffs you had to wait until Saturday night to start the playoffs. With pool play scheduled for Saturday teams on the bubble would have to wait all day Saturday to see if they made the playoffs - that shouldn't have happened.
