You guys do a great job in answering questions and explaining things clearly but I was wondering why baseball has so many different rules - FED, OBR etc...

Wouldn't it make more sense to sit down and come up with a single set of rules and then adjust it slightly based on whether it's Little League, Babe Ruth, High School, College, or Pro?

Isn't other sports rule pretty much consistent throughout?

If the powers that be decided to do this how would you go about getting everything consistent?

I'm not really complaining but it just seems silly and opens the door up for umpire (and coach / player) mistakes. If an ump does OBR one day and FED the next he might get a little confused.

Or, like in SC there are no appeals (like a missed base) it's all an umpires call but in KY you have to ask for an appeal.

Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his goal; nothing on earth can help the man with the wrong mental attitude. Thomas Jefferson

Would it be easier and make sense to have one code and adapt to age, certainly. The problem is it will never happen. Each governing body has to have it's finger in it's book to make it their own. Fed, wants high school sports to be a learning experience, encourage participation and stress safety. This is why some of their rules are different. Some are to try to over simplify the rules and usually ends up confusing the issue. NCAA is like Fed to a degree but a little less strict. Youth leagues generally use pro rules and add their age adaptations for their system.
As to some states adopting some Fed rules and not others, that is a state system thing. I can't begin to explain why they do that.
FED is the biggest problem. NCAA is very close to OBR, with many of the differences arising from the standpoint of player safety.

For some reason, FED chooses to take perfectly good rules, perfectly suitable for high school baseball, and "modify" them to make them more difficult to enforce, usually with no sense to them. An example would be balking the pitcher for turning his shoulders to check a runner, even before beginning the stretch. Thankfully they corrected this, but even the correction is flawed (for some reason, FED allowed the shoulder turn until F1 "brings his hands together" rather than coming set like the rest of the world). It leads me to believe the FED rules makers are a bunch of suits who have never held a bat in their hands.
Coach you are certainly "preaching to the choir" here.....It would be a tremendous help if we could all agree on one code....

But as MST states that will not happen.......each level/governing body/locality always wants to touch the code in some way or another with their rules.

For those of us who call multiple codes, there can be OBR/NFHS/NCAA and their associated mechanic manuals to consult when doing these level games.....

Not to forget the summer leagues of LL/USSA/PONY/Cal Ripken/DIXIE/Legion to name just a few......

Your quote of "If an ump does OBR one day and FED the next he might get a little confused." is correct

This does happen.....and from an Umpire training veiw point, it is often hard to get umpires from one level to keep rules from one code from bleeding into games of another......

Dash is correct that the most aggravating can be NFHS who will come up with a rule.....market its enforcement agressively........then merely a year later drop it.....leading to much aggravation from coaches, players and umpires......

He is a troll, masquerading as a well known and respected umpire from other forums such as http://forum.officiating.com .

The troll was run out of O.com on a rail and has evidently decided to take refuge here, aquiring the identify of "Garth" in the process, right down to his signature and location.

It is best to put him on your ignore list and pay him no mind.

This is getting interesting. I suppose a moderator can't prove or disprove what you claim your name to be. But surely they can trace your IP address to see where you're posting from.

Most assuredly can which is why the real trolls bleat nonsensically.

Don't push your luck---Garth IS NOT your name--I have the info on you

Do you? Then spit out this great wad of intellect.

Waiting....

YOU, Sir, cannot be the Great Garth Benham. I spat and spit with him with frequency! You, Sir, cannot hold an altar boi's candle to The Great Garth.

I taught him everything he knows, Sir.
Hi folks, I see that there has been a little trouble brewing in the past couple of days, evidently with some brand new members coming over from another forum.

New members are very welcome if they are here to discuss baseball and show some basic respect and consideration for other members. Honest disagreement is fine as well, as long as it's handled in a civil and decent way. But if a new member comes on and appears only to be trying to stir up trouble for amusement, that's something we don't need to accept. Please feel free to PM me or click the little triangle button below each post to report a pattern of problem posts.

Thanks!

Julie
