How does it happen that kids end up decommitting and committing elsewhere? Are the college coaches working through third-parties or do they reach out to kids directly? Is it kind of like the portal?

If the potential new school reaches out directly, how would a kid handle that communication when committed elsewhere - ignore it, respond politely, etc?

Fair amount of chatter among the 24s so it got me wondering. Thanks.

Lots of different ways. The most common is probably a coach tells a kid they didn't develop the way they expected since committing in 8th or 9th grade and they should look elsewhere if they are interested in playing. Then the player "gives it a lot of thought" and decommits. I've seen a few kids legitimately level up their school commitment, but it is usually the school/coach making the choice and the player just announces they are looking elsewhere.
