In high school there not a must slide rule, or an avoid rule. If you slide it must be legal.

"Plowing" catcher over doesnot necessarily mean malicious contact. Did he lower his shoulder?; did he have his arms crossed and bring them upward at contact: or was it a "train wreck" two players trying to occupy the same spot at the same time.

It is a judgement call by the ump and based upon the information you have provided so far, it appears the ump made the right call.
If this game was being played under Fed rules the runner should probably be called out for illegal contact.

The contact may not be deemed malicious by the umpire but Rule 8.4.2c indicates that any runner is out if he "does not legally attempt to avoid a fielder in the immediate act of making a play on him." He can't simply run over the catcher just because the catcher is there. He has to at least try to avoid the contact.

This is of no help but I thought it was funny.
I was at Pirate Spring training this year and I was talking with the Pirates AAA catcher, Paul Chiafferido. I asked him "What do I do if a runner is coming home and he obviously wants to take my head off?" He said, "Really what you want to do is make sure you catch the ball, put it in you throwing hand so it doesn't get knocked out, and get low and.................
Hope for the best."
