Confused about coaches being able to respond to players email?

2013 son sent emails to a few coaches asking if he could stop by their office to meet the coaches and intro himself. He recieved email responses back stating they cant contact him, discuss, respond until after his junior year. I had heard that if he called or emailed(even as a 2013) they could talk or email back? Also was told he should send letters and follow up with phone calls. But it sounds as though they cant speak with him by phone either. So is the only way to get communication back at his age via camps?

What would happen if he just showed up at a baseball office unannounced and wanted to say hello? Would coaches say they cant talk and politely close doors.

A little confused here as I thought reaching out to schools of similar interest and fit was the way to go.

He is heading down South to a camp next week and was hoping to see some coaches from other schools on the trip down.

Your help thoughts are appreciated on how he could meet some coaches of schools on the trip down? Many schools of interest will not be at the camp but easy to stop by on the way down.

Bboy400,

Hard to answer without specific details such as D1, D2, D3 as well as what was the context of the email to the coach.

Here is a link that can answer your question(s). I referred to these quite often when my oldest son was HS junior and senior, as well as the recruiting calendars (second link). Alot of my questions where answered just by browsing these, and asking questions at HSBBWeb for specifics.

You'll want to go to page 20.

Good luck, and keep the questions coming if you have more.

A 2013 can call the coach, and the coach is allowed to talk if he picks up the call. The coach can't inititate a call or return a call.

A coach can't text. Nor can he email (except the sort of email your son received or camp invitations) until Sept 1 of the junior year.

At any time, perhaps 1000 or more high school players will have interest in a particular college, and each player will perceive that there is a "fit". Out of that 1000, perhaps 50 have the level of skill/ talent that is interesting to the coach. So most coaches don't want to spend time communicating with players unless they already know the player's qualifications.

A player has to do something to get on the radar. Could be a camp, a showcase, a showcase tournament, or a high profile competitive tournament. If the player is in a well respected high school league, that will help. High school and travel team coaches who have credibility with college coaches can recommend players, but credibility is maintained only if the the HS or travel coach provides unbiased assessments of a player. So a player shouldn't expect his coach to try to sell or promote the player.

Finally, the top 2013 players will be committing verbally to top D1s about a year from now. Most players don't fit that description, and it will be 2 or more years yet before they get an offer. College coaches are not now giving much thought to most 2013 players.

Thx Fenway

The schools are D1 academic type. He basically told them he was driving through and gave some backround info(PG info,HS grades 6"2 180 etc) on himself. They basically said they cant officially speak with him until after Jr year.Perhaps emails are highly monitored? I cant imagine if we dropped in that they cant talk? The site you referred me to said he can call and make unofficial visits. Very confusing.

Should his travel ball call the coaches. BTW Cornell is a school of interest but not this trip.
BBoy:

Because of the restrictions, emails are monitored.

The reason unofficial visits are allowed is that the prohibition from speaking to your son doesn't apply if he's on campus.

How great that your son seems to be on a track that would allow him to attend a high caliber school academically and play the game he loves!

Congratulations and best wishes to him!
