contacting coaches

My son just sent out his introductory letters. When should he follow up with the coaches? I know many suggested making a phone call. Here are my questions:

1. Do you call the head coach, pitching coach (if your son is a pitcher) or recruiting coordinator?

2. How long should he wait until he makes the phone call?

3. Does he leave word if the coach does not answer? Does he leave his number with the coach (it is on his intro. letter)

Any help is welcome.
