1st & 3rd, R1 stealing, batter swings, foul tip, HPU calls foul. R1 returning to 1B is tagged. BU stops play and allows R1 to return to 2nd. We were the defensive team and I was nearly run for what would be the first time in 10 yrs. Should not the HPU's call of foul put R1 back on 1st ? BU claimed it was a correctable error and gave him 2nd.
An educated man went to visit a Zen master. He wished to learn what the Zen master knew. The master invited him in for tea and listened as his visitor told of his outstanding education. As the visitor talked on and on about his long and valuable education, the Zen master began pouring more tea for the man, until his cup was overflowing and the tea was spilling onto the man and onto the floor. “Stop,” the man said, “My cup is already too full; it cannot hold anymore.” “Yes,” said the Zen Master.

If it was indeed a foul tip, it is just a strike, regardless of PU's verbal mistake. The runners may advance.

However, runners may also screw up as this one did and get tagged. Runner is out and BU should not have called time.

The PU's "verbal mistake" is correctable and it would be a gross misjustice to punish the runner for following the umpire's direction.

Depends on the rule set. In FED a call of "foul" kills play, regardless of its accuracy.

In OBR, per the MLBUM, it would depend on the reaction of the players. In MLB, there have been several cases of foul balls being changed to fair. I witnessed one in which the fielder had even given up on the ball, but the change to fair was allowed anyway.

If R1 was obviously reacting to the umpires call, then I would have killed play. On the other hand, if R1 simply didn't know the difference between a foul tip and a foul ball, I'd let the out stand.

Sorry you had to see that...

Correctable yes.
1. Mr. PU needs training, knowledge and experience.

2. BU gets a new partner.

3. File a protest/formal, ph: call to assignor, league. Tough love for this guy, he wouldn't be out there if he didn't want to do a good job, do what you can to see he get's the help he needs.

4. No need to get tossed or upset, HP umpire was hosed, except that and move on. His partner was probably having a heart attack as it was.

As far as on the field, no it can't be fixed to everybodies satisfaction.
If the play executed without regard to the errant call, it'd be nice to let the play stand as it occured. If that is indeed the "right" call.

By rule "foul" kills it and that's that.
By rule PU misapplied the rule, that is also that.

Kinda like the little dive I ate at the other night; the food was crummy, but at least it was cold too..
