The game is scheduled for Thursday at Cosby.

Pitching matchups are a question mark. Marrs was to have gone today at Clover Hill, but it appears that one's getting washed out, so both Marrs and Stadler will be fresh for Thursday. Cosby will likewise have both Shaban and Ackerman. It's early in the season, so you might see all 4 go, no one's really ready to go all 7 just yet -- at least not against top competition.

I don't think you could predict the outcome of this one. Both teams have pitching capable of shutting down anyone on any given day. Both teams have shown themselves capable of putting 10+ on the board if you give them an opening. Cosby's lunar surface field might play a role. The only thing you can count on is that it'll be fought tooth and nail to the final out.

Follow-up points:

I didn't realize Cosby's infield had gotten sodded in the off season. It played very well yesterday despite the elements. Not a factor, unlike so many times last year.

In my observation, Ackerman threw quite well, but JR just didn't show up for whatever reason. Maybe they were thinking the game would get cancelled and got caught not fired up to play, I don't know, but the offense was AWOL all day.

Stadler took his first loss in 2 years. A routine grounder with 2 outs and a man on 3d got booted to score a run in the 2nd. Worse, that meant the # 8 man had to be faced then instead of in the 3d. Stadler got that out, and then retired the # 9 man leading off the 3d. But at that point it's only 1 out instead of the 2 outs he should've had. Next 5 batters went walk, single, single, RBI grounder, and single, and suddenly it was 4-0. But for the error in the 2nd it would've been 1-0.

Stadler allowed no hits the rest of the way and even pitched around two more errors. Marrs was not called upon at all. But with the offense doing nothing the damage was done.

Just goes to show how ERA is often inadequate to compensate a pitcher's stat line for shoddy defense.

Also, on another note, I talked to Rich Graham of RBA South at the game. He has worked with Marrs for years and has been working with Ronnie Shaban more recently. According to Graham, Shaban can now cruise in the 90-91 range and has touched 94 on occasion. We didn't see quite that MPH in Shaban's closing job yesterday; facing just 2 batters didn't give him a chance to limber up in what was by that time a cold and steady rain. But it does appear that Cosby is going to have a 1-2 mound tandem to rival anybody's, and with their offense and team experience they remain the team to beat in the region IMHO.

It also means that, counting Marrs, Shaban and Manchester's Chris Hardee, the Dominion once again has three 90+ arms coming at you this year. Which should give the teams heading to regionals at the end of the year an advantage, since they won't be overmatched if they run into a high MPH guy at that stage of the season.

Hopefully JR can hold serve at home on April 29 and then we'll see how the playoffs go. But I don't think you can rate Cosby's win as any kind of an upset, they are too good for that.
