Just saw on the PG website that Alabama State "Landed" a 2017(HS graduation year) 2B. This is crazy and something I just dont get? I have a child that will graduate the same year from HS and there is no way she is ready to decide what college to attend as an 8th grader. When will the recruiting madness end? Has anyone ever seen an earlier commit for Baseball. I know a Delaware kid committed to USC(Trojans) for football (QB) as an 8th grader and thought that was crazy as well.

That is nuts. There has to be something more to the story such as a family alumni or something. Crazy stuff for sure!

A girl at my youngest son's high school committed to UNC basketball between 8th and 9th grade. I've been told (by people that know the sport) that it is not terribly unusual as these kids go to these summer basketball camps and wind up with offers before they get to high school. Is baseball headed toward this? I wonder.

BBoy400 - The schedules are finally out. Let's try to get together this spring. Smile

I can see it with girls. They physically mature much earlier than boys. In D1 softball recruiting classes are mostly filled by end of soph year. But can an 8th grade girl know what she wants for a major which can affect school choice? My daughter wanted to be a teacher from the time she lined up her dolls like a classroom. By the time she was halfway through high school she decided there was no way she wanted to be a teacher.
All changes or additions to player profiles are monitored by staff. The verbal commitment mentioned here was not entered by anyone outside our office.

That said, nothing about that commitment makes sense. The grad year, position, size, college, just don't add up. We are looking into it, to make sure it is true.

BTW Alabama State is doing a good job of recruiting.

Yes, there have been cases of 8th graders verbally committing. I've never understood why there would be a good reason for that.
A few years ago there was an 8th grade basketball phenom in our area that verballed to Kentucky. (BTW he had been held back a year or two) He ended up being a SI story about what can go wrong in college recruiting. The coach got fired and the new coach had no idea who this kid was. Of course they did not offer him a spot and the phenom ended up not being such a phenom after all and wound up at a JC someplace and never materialized into much of a player. I am not sure if he played at a 4 year school or not.
The article below might be of interest.

From DI to 13U

Often I wonder if these real early commitments are just to gain some interest from Professional scouting.

When we see a ninth grade SS that runs way below average and has a well below average arm and he weighs 100 lbs... I just don't understand why he is involved in committing to a college. More so, I can't understand why a college would be so interested. Not to say, the player won't end up being an All American some day, but why not wait and see how he develops? It's not like all the nation's top programs will be chasing after him.

Then again, I have seen 13 year old players that I would sign on the spot. A few that come to mind... Justin Upton, Delmon Young, Bryce Harper.

Not strange at all... Look at the name.

It's Mervyl's kid... yes the ASU head coach. He was head coach at Bethune Cookman for many years before taking the ASU job.

Do you think dad will still be there when he sets foot on campus?

Who knows... when I first heard about it my reaction was do they really need to announce that his 8th grade kid is coming to same school dad coaches at.

Mervyl also ran the MBA teams down in Florida when he was in Florida. Looks like he has them in Bama also. I always wondered how he was a head coach of a D1 school and ran a baseball academy at the same time.
