My son plays in the North Suburban, and I think the CSL, overall, has better top level teams. However, based on the teams my son plays, I don't think it's as strong as the DuPage Valley Conference or the Mid-Suburban Conference. Plus, some of the southern suburban conferences and Catholic leagues are very, very strong.JMO
When u talk abouth the csl as a whole it is not that great. There are a couple of really bad programs in the in the north and south. However, I believe Glenbrook South reached the Super Sectionals last summer and lost in like 10 innings and New Trier has been ranked in the preseason top 5 for the last five years. The conference also produces a handful of division 1 "studs" every year.

on the contrary goose, i think the CSL is an above average conferecne for baseball in Illinois. You can realize when most teams take their "trips" during spring break and play schools from different suburbs to schools in the south, the CSL fairs very well. The best argument one can make is the number of state placers over the last ten years. Well, that is because we are too busy beating each other up in the playoffs!! There have been two number one NT teams that have been knocked off by Evanston, GBN was knocked out last year (by I believe) Maine South, and the year before an experienced Maine South team was knoced out by a young GBS.
In my opinion looking at the state as a whole the csl is above average but not at the top in illinois. But on the other hand the csl does not get as much press or notification as teams south or west of the city. Each year the conference has a couple of extremely talented teams and it is always interesting to see how they do in the state playoffs. I think that this year the conference will be very competitive and each team will have to be at their best everyday. I also think the top two teams will be New Trier with alot of youth could be a suprising contender and Niles North will again be strong
The CSL is an average conference. The top of the conference is strong, but as with most conferences, the bottom is...well...the BOTTOM. New Trier's most significant competition comes from outside of the conference, with a non-con schedule to rival anyone's. NT seems to be the only perenial powerhouse (yes, I am biased). But, every year a different team or two seems to float towards the top.

NT should capture the South again with an extremely strong junior class and some solid seniors, including a very underrated number 1 starter in Hofeld. The North should be more contentious with Niles North the most likely top dog.

The conference does produce a good amount of D1 and college ballplayers--more due to the number of larger schools than the relative strength of the programs.
Goose,

NT's non-con schedule regularly includes:

2-3 of the top Class A teams to start the season,
Stevenson, Carmel, Notre Dame, Sandburg, Mt. Carmel, Fremd, St. Rita, and Lockport.

In addition, they usually play in the Schaumburg Flyers Tournament--match ups determined by the tournament.

I am sure I am missing a couple of others--those are just off the top of my head. If I forgot any top team NT regularly plays, please forgive me--I didn't mean to slight you, but it is late.

Funny Goose made the exact same post I was going to make so I totaly agree. Most CSL teams do play some pretty tough out of conference games and I think it makes the in-conference matchups all the more competitive. Glenbrook South I know plays and over the last few years has at times beaten teams like: Oak Park, Loyola, Schamburg, Rolling Meadows, Wheaton North and Lake Forest.

Also just to toss a few names out I know that this year's GBS team will be awful young but does have some good players in senior lefty pitcher Jon Carlson and junior shortstop Jeff Grodecki.
