Had a chance to talk one-on-one with both Jim Hendry and Larry Rothschild when the Cubs Caravan rolled through Peoria on Wednesday. Talked with Rothschild for 15-20 minutes about their pitching situation. Three things surprised me:
1) Didn't mention Prior until I brought him up and he said that if Mark can go great, but they're not counting on him.
2) Said they're going to stretch Cotts out in Spring Training like he's preparing to be a starter.
3) I asked specifically what he was trying to fix on Marquis, whether it was an arm-slot deal, throwing across his body, something in his lower half. First Larry looked at me like I was crazy for asking mechanics-specific questions and then just said "We want to get him some confidence and back to doing some things he used to do naturally."
Nice get for Hendry & Cubs. Got Samardzija to sign a 5 yr/10 mil major league deal and give up football. A bit surprised as he was projected as mid-late 1st rounder in NFL draft. However, baseball money is guaranteed and NFL $ is not - plus those NFL guys hit pretty hard.
He needs some polish but size & arm strength definitely there. He's probably 2-3 years away from getting a shot to make big club.
Things looking up a bit on north side while Sox continue to watch the 05 series dvd in front of the fireplace and the Chairman (Henry F. Potter) keeps counting his cash he's saving.
denis, I think this was a potentially great signing. While Samardzja is indeed a high profile college athlete, no team except the Cubs thought there was a chance that he'd quit football for baseball, or if they did they wouldn't pay what it took to get him to put down the pigskin. Yeah, it took a lot of millions to do it, but it's not our money. If he didn't play football, he'd have been a first round pick in the draft and would have gotten above slot money anyway.

Nice comeback dad. Keep the dvd in good shape as it will need to be converted to a small chip in about 5 years. Enjoy the viewing as your small-market payroll (along with the exodus of Crede, Dye,Buehrle, aging Thome etc. along with anyone else who wants to get paid current dollars) shifts the momentum back to the northside.
The magic lasted an entire, glorious season. It disappeared last year. When everything you touch turns to gold an arrogance often sets in and you think any player you plug in will magically work out. Doesn't work that way. Add in a reluctance to spend the new tv dollars and within a few years you'll be back to 17,000 on half price Mondays and middle of the road teams.
I could be dead wrong about both teams futures but as a Cub fan you need something to hold onto.
Denisr-

As a lifelong Sox fan, I don't have much faith in a near future re-peat for the Sox. However, I really wonder about the logic in giving an ex-football guy a $10 million dollar deal. Who was the last draft pick to get that much dough and is the dude really that good? I heard Manship was the best guy on the ND staff last year and he got pennies compared to Samardzija. Maybe I am too close to remembering the Borchard experiment on the South side. Didn't that work out well?
