Heard a rumor today that starting next season all D1 colleges will schedule 3 game conference series with each conference opponent, playing 1 game each on Fr, Sat, & Sun. Anybody else hear this, or know anything about it?
The Missouri Valley Conference has adopted that policy and started this season playing 3 game series. It does make your Saturdays go faster without the double header. One less starting pitcher is needed and more value is placed on recruiting hitting. I understand that most conferences are already 3 game series.
I'd be surprised if the NCAA mandated it, though I've been surprised with the stupidity of some of these folks before.
In my son's conference (MEAC), they play two on Saturdays (9 and 7), then the Sunday game. He has been able to go to Friday classes almost all season. Saves a hotel day, too, in some cases.
A lot of conferences play their series as three singles now. But given the stress on class time already, I like my kid going to class on Fridays. In some conferences, Friday games mean they miss class on Thursdays, too.
As a pitcher in the Missouri Valley, I will tell you that it does make those Saturdays go a lot quicker. Makes the mid-weeks a little longer with 2 games, but I remember dreading some Saturdays
