Son is going in for an informal visit with the school he is very interested...when looking at the school's baseball roster(D1) it appears the team has 40 players. I would appreciate it if I could have an explanation of how a D1 determines it's roster size. Also, how many players go to confernce games, tournament games, or non-conference games. What is the purpose of a reserve team-do those players get $$.

D1 allows all players to travel for non conference games and 28 for conference games. This roster can change from week to week. It also depends on the coaches budget. Though sons HC cut back on some things, he was not stingy in letting most of the team travel.
Championship rosters are 25 and set for post season, no changes allowed even if a player becomes injured.

40 man roster essentially means that most players who are not redshirted have an opportunity to play through the season to make the final 25 man roster. However, sometimes coaches get so stuck on just using certain players, most sit.

As far as travel, ask school how many they travel with, Son's school traveled with 25, not budget as much as distraction (extra players, with no shot of playing on a 3 day weekend could be a distraction).

Also some schools may show roster of 30 but have 35 total (could be red shirts, or players coach has on team but are not active, including injuries) You can't go by what is on school website necessarily. It is a fair question to ask coaches on a visit.

TPM had 28 for ACC, Sons conference is 25
Thanks guys I may have messed up. I do know that most (not redshort) of the team traveled so maybe I am assuming that it was 28, with maybe only 25 in uniform.

I think this is a good question to ask about traveling during the season. Some say why do they travel if they don't play. I think it brings aobut good chemistry to be there to support your team.

Also good question to ask is if your son gets a uniform and number if redshirted.

I wholeheartedly agree with that. Our son's team will travel with 25 during the Pac-10 away games...but the whole squad for most other away games. For NCAA tournament games, they take everyone although only 25 can dress. It is GREATLY appreciated by the players.

I know at least one CWS team this year that sent their extra 10-or-so players home for the summer...didn't even keep them around for home regional and super-regional games. Nor did they take them to the CWS. That seemed very odd to me.

No RS players travelled with the team.

OK, THIS I know, 25 man roster may be what is allowed but the FINAL D1 roster is not until championship games. You can't switch your roster during NCAA playoffs. So the ones not making teh roster were sent home because you cannot make a switch.
For many, that is an incentive to work hard during the year, to make the final roster and participate in NCAA tournaments. You do not have to be a regularly starter to achieve that goal.
Taking the extra players during the year would be a coaches option at his expense I suppose. You can switch the day to day roster when traveling, I am almost positive on that one.
2006 year, coach took two players who made contributions to the team to Omaha that had not made the 25 man final roster.
I heard of a situation in a program where players who did not play regularly were sent home spring break. This was a large program at a large school. Does this happen often to anyone's knowledge?

My son was injured and had surgery after the 4th game of the season. He did come home during spring break but the coach let him and one other player make the trip to the regionals at UVA. He couldn't wear the uniform but was allowed to be in the dugout during the games.

He was also allowed to travel with the team for a weekend I was going to be in Annapolis when they were playing Navy.

Spring break if your not on the 25 man roster you do go home when they travel, at least at his school.

yea-we have a summer league here where i live, a guy from miss. state joined the team even though the bulldogs were still in the super regionals and CWS
I think what is confusing here is the meaning of travel with. Yes the coach can take players out of uniform and that cannot play on the trip. You can take half the school with you on the bus if you wish.
The coach can only take 25 that can suit up to play. If the team goes over night and has to feed and accomodate players who can not play that is his descision based on budget. Most coaches do not want to pay for this added expense. Many players who want to go pay for their food and lodging.
