Just curious if anyone has a player or known one that was a D1 transfer to D2 school that transitioned to D1 the players second season of play at the institution?

So a D1 to D2 back to D1 via a schools transition up to a D1. Does the player have to sit because the institution is now D1 baseball or is he waived?

I hope Rick replies to this, because it would be interesting to see what info he has. I would think that he would not have to sit out considering the D2 school that becomes D1 will not be a "full" eligible member until the beginning of the institution's 5th year in the new D1 conference, meaning they can't participate after the regular season in those years (I think)....

Common sense is not a core organizational competency of the NCAA so I understand the question and concern.   However when dealing with transfers, the language is always written for the benefit of the NCAA member organizations and from the perspective of the transferee's limited rights as a result of the choice to make the change.  So, I think you have to separate out what the player elected to do and what the member organization elected to do....very interesting situation.  In this case, it is the NCAA member organization chose to reclassify from D2 to D1, so the question is will they waive or grandfather the player as a result of that change.

No offense to Rick, the man knows his stuff like nobody else on this site and has helped many.   However, this is one of those sitations where I think I'd be calling the NCAA 1-877-262-1492 to document the call as further information may be needed.  Then I'd talk and consult Rick about details and a possible strategy.

If I understand the issue correctly, the athlete has already been at the D2 college for one full academic year before it transitioned to D1.  If that's the case, there shouldn't be any reason to "sit" as long as the athlete is meeting all of the academic requirements for progress toward his degree.

FenwaySouth, no offense taken to your comment.  But folks should keep in mind that the staff members on the NCAA customer service line are oftentimes the rookies straight out of law school without a lot of experience.  Once in a while, a person will do just as you've suggested and will call me to go over details and strategy, and I'll hear them remark "they didn't tell me about that."
