I have been monitoring a few large D1 schools that my son has interest in, to target their next camp that is coming up...

In looking at their baseball home page, I see several are holding open try-outs for their students? Is this a normal practice? Is this an indication they are behind on a certain class or is this just par for the course in a world where travel costs and low scholarship limits make them turn over every rock?

I've heard of several schools holding tryouts - none that actually charge students to tryout...

My son's school does open tryouts and one of his good friends made the team - and got playing time. They have to have some way to fill the non-scholarship parts of their rosters...

I've heard of some schools that, while they offer tryouts, you really don't have a shot at even the non-scholarship positions if you aren't a recruited walk-on...

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but if you show up with an athletic scholarship, you are on the spring roster - just competing for playing time...
It has nothing to do with money.
I believe the NCAA requires a walk on tryout be done for registered students. Most schools don't make it all that easy to know when and it is even tougher once on the field, if someone finds out when, but was not recruited by the program.
TurnTwo, if you show up with an athletic scholarship, you are guaranteed that money for that year. You are not guaranteed a roster spot, necessarily when Spring arrives.

I thought that the only thing required was that if they did have tryouts, it be advertised.
