My son is a sophomore pitcher at a D3. He wants to tranfer out of that current D3 school and try to walk on at a D2 school. He wants to transfer after this years fall semster to the D2. So this would mean that he is tranferring mid year. He has a close friend at the D2 school and was actually recruited by them during High School but chose to go to the D3 school instead. We know he can definitely walk on and pitch at the D2 school that he plans on transferring. Assuming he won't be given any athletic money at the D2 school and that he is tranferring mid year, how would this whole process work? And will he have to obtain a release from the D3 school that he is currently attending? Will he have to sit a year as I have heard somethings about that in the past where a transfer has to sit out a year when they transfer to another school. Any help from anyone with any insight or anyone who has been through this type of thing before would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about a mid-year release, but after ending the school year, our son did have to get a release letter from the D-lll to go to a D-ll. You get the release letter from the person that is in charge of complience of the NCAA rules. For son it was the Asst. AD. The coach had to approve too, but the coach does not pyhsically send the letter. You need a certified copy of your grades from the D-111 school too.
Ok so I just wanted to clarify this since I seem to be a bit confused and maybe its just because I am over/underthinking Confused .... but I am going to assume that my son would be eligible to play right away at the D2 because of that exception rule. In that transfer guide that you previously posted on page 19 it said to be able to use that 1. You must be playing a sport besides D1 baseball etc.
2. be in good academic standing/progress towards degree.
3. Have been considered eligible if you had stayed at previous school.
4. Have written release.

Since my son would have all of those this would obviously make him eligible to play right away at the D2 and not have to sit a year. Am I correct?
