Virginia sophomore and Maryland resident (Bethesda, Maryland, Saint Albans High School, DC)) Danny Hultzen has been tabbed as a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Award, which goes to the national player of the year in college baseball. The pitcher/ first baseman is one of 25 players still in the running for the prestigious honor.

Hultzen continues to shine on the mound this season. In 12 starts, he holds a 7-1 record with a 1.98 ERA. His earned run average is good enough for tops in the ACC, 12th in the nation, and opponents are batting just .177 against him. Hultzen also leads the conference in strikeouts, boasting 99 thus far on the season. He's gone at least six innings in eleven of his 12 starts on the year.

The sophomore's only loss of the season came back on March 5 against Wright State. Hultzen gave up two runs over seven innings, with only one of the runs being earned. He tallied nine strikeouts in the hard-luck losing effort and did not walk a batter.

Agree: As a freshman, Kline has earned one of three weekend spots on the UVA rotation. His fastball has been clocked consistently at 92 mph and his confidence and presence (for a freshman) has been unbelievable. Although he was a low round draft choice (last year), his decision to experience college hopefully will be an example to others --- His stock will continue to rise and he will earn some significant college credits and have a fantastic college experience prior to reentering the draft at the end of his junior year. Good kid!
Hultzen, Kline, Texiera, Floyd - all worthy of that award as well as some others that deserve to be in that conversation. I just wish we could put the live in md v. go to school in md debate to bed. The bottom line is who cares? It seems the debate started over the MSABC all state team. If you were to ask the players who have now moved on, I am sure they would not care about a HS award from years ago. They have moved on to bigger, better, and more exciting times. For guys like Hultzen, he has his best days in front of him and I wish him all the success in the world - as I am sure we all do. It is the parents that seem to hold grudges and can't let it go. I am sad for them that they have to dwell in the past.
Interesting yet Arguable Subject Area.
Might help to define / agree criteria / business rules!
Just HS? College? Pro? After playing?

Go back 80+ years and would anyone say Walter Johnson? (I would)

Babe Ruth? (I would)
(And cr^pola the Baltimore Archdiocese is closing Cardinal Gibbons, where he played!)

The hottest and most interesting current topic
is the 16 NCAA Regional host sites to be announced this afternoon.

Of course the field of 64 for the NCAA tournament will be announced Monday afternoon

Amazingly, the UVA AD is selling tickets for potential NCAA Regional and Super Regional tournaments.

So you don't believe the NCAA looks at revenue generating opportunities?

Not cheap either. Regional all-session ticket books will be sold for $60. Reserved seating and $45 for General Admission seating.

Super Regional all-session ticket books may be purchased for $36 for Reserved seating and $24 for General Admission seating.

3,000+ tickets have been sold for the potential regional and the potential super regional. Amazing, yet not surprising.

Univ of Maryland hosted a Regional Tournament last week at Taylor Field and did not get close to that revenue. Imagine that.

OBTW: "hard-luck losing" effort vs Wright State?
.....Is there a hard-luck winning effort (vs Miami at the ACC Tournament)?

"Although he was a low round draft choice (last year), his decision to experience college hopefully will be an example to others ---"

Decision to Experience College? This is arguable.
A better example to others is Bryce Harper who could receive $5M to sign. Since $12M will make grandchildren financially secure, maybe $5M secures a Mom, two wives and four children!

Danny Hultzen continues to represent the best that the State of Maryland has to offer ---

2010 All-ACC Team

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - A school-record seven Virginia baseball players have been named to the 2010 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Team by voting of the league's coaches. Virginia also captured two of the major awards, as Danny Hultzen (So., Bethesda, Md.) earned Pitcher of the Year honors, while Brian O'Connor was named Coach of the Year.
Hultzen joins teammates Phil Gosselin (Jr., West Chester, Pa.) and Kevin Arico (Jr., Flemington, N.J.) on the All-ACC First Team. Gosselin earned a spot on the First Team in the outfield, while Arico was the conference's lone First Team representative at relief pitcher.

Hultzen is the first Cavalier to earn ACC Pitcher of the Year honors. He was a first-team honoree at utility last season as a freshman. In 2010, he leads the ACC with a 2.08 earned run average as well as 106 strikeouts. He boasts an 8-1 record this season, including a 6-0 mark in ACC games. Hultzen is among the contenders for several national awards, including the Dick Howser Trophy.

O'Connor was voted ACC Coach of the Year for the second time. He also earned the award in his first season at Virginia (2004). He led the top-ranked Cavaliers to a 45-10 overall regular-season record, a Coastal Division title (with a 23-7 ACC mark) and the top seeding for the ACC Championship. Virginia's 45 wins tie for third-best in school history and stand just four victories shy of the record 49 posted by last season's College World Series team.
