Virginia sophomore and Maryland resident (Bethesda, Maryland, Saint Albans High School, DC)) Danny Hultzen has been tabbed as a semifinalist for the Dick Howser Award, which goes to the national player of the year in college baseball. The pitcher/ first baseman is one of 25 players still in the running for the prestigious honor.
Hultzen continues to shiente on the mound this season. In 12 starts, he holds a 7-1 record with a 1.98 ERA. His earned run average is good enough for tops in the ACC, 12th in the nation, and opponents are batting just .177 against him. Hultzen also leads the conference in strikeouts, boasting 99 thus far on the season. He's gone at least six innings in eleven of his 12 starts on the year.
The sophomore's only loss of the season came back on March 5 against Wright State. Hultzen gave up two runs over seven innings, with only one of the runs being earned. He tallied nine strikeouts in the hard-luck losing effort and did not walk a batter.
