Danny Hultzen, Maryland resident and UVA Number One (1) pitcher is scheduled to pitch tonight on ESPNU against the number one seed college team and number one rated pitcher in the US.....tonight at 7PM. This is a regional baseball game competition towards the college world series. Hultzen attended St. Albans High School in Washington DC and as a freshman this year has earned ACC Rookie of the Year, All-ACC Team and a spot on the US National Team.

I had also thought, and hoped, this would be the case.

This morning's Richmond Times-Dispatch, however, indicated that Robert Morey might get the start. Which surprised me, to say the least -- no offense to Robert Morey of course, but Danny's been their # 1 all season long.

What's your source as to him being tonight's starter? It surely wouldn't surprise me to find that the RTD got it wrong (again!).
Actually I think San Diego State is the number 3 seed in the region. UVA is #2 and Irvine is #1.

From the UVA website: (it looks like Morey)

Virginia is slated to start RHP Robert Morey (2-0, 3.25 ERA) tonight, while San Diego State will counter with RHP Stephen Strasburg (13-0, 1.24), who is one of the top pitching prospects in the nation.
Had to like how the Morey kid threw----great move on Coach O'Connors part---Morey matched Strasburg kid pitch for pitch AND HE GOT THE WIN---Now SDSU is in the losers bracket and Strasburg should be done for the weekend---I cannot see him coming back in this weekends event

Bottom line-- some great baseball with some even greater underlying stories
More accolades for Danny Hultzen. Very impressive!

"IRVINE, Calif. – Danny Hultzen (Fr., Bethesda, Md.) pitched a masterful 7.1 shutout innings and the Virginia offense broke through for five runs in the fifth and sixth innings as the Cavaliers shut out top-ranked UC Irvine, 5-0, Saturday night at the 2009 NCAA Irvine Regional at Anteater Ballpark in Irvine, Calif. UCI is the top seed in the regional and the No. 6 national seed, while UVa is the No. 2 seed in the regional."

UVA was placed in a tough regional across the country and they are producing.
Hultzen beats the number one pitcher in US and number one seed in regionals. Hultzen is a Maryland resident but was not considered for the All-Maryland Team because of a rule developed by the Maryland Coaches to ensure ample representation of their players. -- Goes to show that the best Maryland players are not represented by the All-Maryland Team.....

Virginia (45-12-1) advances to the regional championship game at 11 p.m. ET Sunday. The Cavaliers will face the winner of the UC Irvine-San Diego State game which precedes the championship game at 7 p.m. ESPNU and Comcast SportsNet each will have live coverage of both games. The winner of the UCI-SDSU game will have to beat the Cavaliers twice in order to move on the Super Regionals.

Hultzen (9-1) went a career-high 7.1 innings and pitched into the eighth inning for the first time in his career. He allowed six hits and just one walk while striking out three. Tyler Wilson (So., Midlothian, Va.) pitched an inning before Matt Packer (Jr., Germantown, Tenn.) tossed the final two-thirds of an inning as the Cavaliers became the first team to shut out the Anteaters this season.
Wow TrepFan you are amazing....you still won't let it go. You have some major issues. Congrats to Danny H. for a great season, and a great performance Saturday night vs the #1 ranked team in the nation.....I am sure all he could think about at the end of the night Saturday, was about not making the All MD team in HS. I guess T. Hibbs should be mad that he didn't make the Maryland Juco 1st team all conference. He lives in MD, but goes to school in Florida. Some parents are amazing...
Virginia’s Danny Hultzen (Bethesda, Maryland resident) has been named to the 2009 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America Team, as chosen by Collegiate Baseball.

Hultzen has been a two-way standout for the Cavaliers this season. The first ACC Freshman of the Year in Virginia history, Hultzen has seen time at pitcher, first base, left field and designated hitter this year. On the mound, he has a 9-1 record with a 2.01 ERA in 15 games (14 starts). In 80.2 innings, Hultzen has 90 strikeouts, which is a Virginia freshman record.

At the plate, Hultzen has a .335 batting average – tops among ACC freshmen. He also has three home runs and 33 runs batted in. Hultzen has been named to the Irvine All-Regional Team (pitcher) as well as the ACC All-Tournament Team (Utility/DH) this year.

Midlo,

I know that Trep Fan in not Hultzan's Dad. He is the father of another UVA player who played at a DC PRIVATE SCHOOl. Yet he constantly for the past year has been going on and on about kids like his son who weren't recognized by Maryland State High School Association. I can understand bringing it up once, but the guy has brought it up in probably 30 different topics over the last year.
Midlo that is where that comment came from fyi, and I think it was extremly justified. Again congrats to Danny H.
Trep, one of us knows something the other one doesn't. As TR's note references, our whole coaching staff got canned. I personally think our pitching coach got scapegoated, but I can see that you'd want the new head guy to pick his own staff.

Unless you know who our coaches are going to be ... did I miss a press release?

In other words, to answer TR, no idea. Just internet gossip, no info from anyone in a position to know.

The first word of the firings came via an e-mail from the AD's office to the players, which my son forwarded to me. Then a release posted on the school's official athletic web site. I suspect that's how we'll get the news when a new guy is picked.

But I also suspect that at least some of the guys our AD would like to interview are still kind of busy with their current jobs. For one more weekend at least.
I have to agree that as fantastic as Hultzen was as a prep player - he played in a school NOT in MD. The all-MD teams are for player in schools that are in the MD border. Hultzen should have been all district and was an all-american. Doesn't the fact that he mad all-american make an all-state team seem pointless? I think the system of making an all-state team only if you play on a school team is 100% fair and just - it opens too many loopholes to do it any other way. A kid from California who chose to go to Georgetown Prep should be eligible for all-California honors - makes no sense!
Listen to ESPN this Saturday at 7PM during their telecast of the World Series. Hultzen will be playing and may be the starting pitcher and he will be advertised as a resident of the State of Maryland in Bethesda/Chevy Chase. He will be a terrific example of how baseball players from the State of Maryland demonstrate (without Maryland Baseball Coaches interference/input/manipulation) --- truely the highest degree of baseball skills --- as a real and true representive of the State of Maryland.
Whatever, but just let it go. Your rants on this subject are pointless.

No one cares about the recognition of a prep school player who played in a different location EXCEPT THE FATHER OF THE PLAYER WHO WANTED ONE MORE HONOR FOR HIS SON. NO ONE CARES BUT YOU. Your son got plenty of recognition, well deserved, for his high school years. He doesn't need any more. It doesn't affect what his friends think of him. It doesn't affect what his mother or girlfriend think of him. It won't affect his scholarship at UVa. It won't affect his playing time at UVa. it won't affect his potential draft status someday. It won't affect what his kids think of him someday.

Yes, as you move through the baseball world, announcers and reporters document where you are from more than the specific teams you played on. It's easier for their broader audience to understand and more relevant too. That doesn't validate your belittling of the Maryland Public School Coaches.

Stop filling these threads with this nonsense.

The one and only one valid point that you make above is that the State of residence is "more relevant." Thank you.
1. Hultzen is a resident of MD.
2. Hultzen is a fantastic player and we all are proud of his success and wish him nothing but the best in the future.
3. The MSABC is made up of high school coaches from schools in MD, both public and private.
4. Hultzen played at high school that was not in the state of MD.

These are facts. The MSABC has a RESPONSIBILITY to honor players that played at schools in MD. HULTZEN did not! There is no manipulation by anyone in the MSABC - they honor those that PLAYED in MD! Both public school coaches and private school coaches are members too - a point you keep omitting. Lets move on!
I tried to change my username to Hult_for_HoF but they wouldn't let me. Maybe I can get a BigHult.com domain name from GODADDY. I need to get in on this campaign. I wonder if he will go in to the HoF as an Oriole since he is a Maryland guy. Doesn't matter who he'll play for - HE'S A MARYLAND GUY. He doesn't even have to make the bigs, I bet. Anybody smart enough to leave Maryland public schools for DC, or to head for UVA instead of the state school gets my vote for the all-Maryland. Oh, wait a minute - he didn't make it. What is the all-Maryland team, anyway? Is there one? While we're at it, is there a College Baseball Web we could move this to, since this feller isn't in High School any longer?

Wouldn't this be embarrassing to an All-American player?

I hope this Va player from DC who has mommy and daddy in Md does well tonight.

Agree! He is a Maryland Guy and there are at least 10 other similar situations of Maryland Guys that were excluded by the Maryland Baseball Coaches.....but you are right -- "it all comes out in the wash" and diminishes the intent of the All-Maryland Team.
Trepfan, just because you, your son Scott, and Danny are from the same state doesn't justify anything about the state of Maryland. Danny's biggest jump came when he was at St. Albans where he went for 6 years. St. Albans and his dad made him who he was, not the state of Maryland. Don't try to justify anything about Scott just because you and him hail from the same state as Danny. That's a juvenile argument. We will see how your kid does when he comes back, which won't be until next year I guess.
Well, I didn't know on June 4, but I found out on June 13.

I would guess the Terps AD found out on June 12-13, when Walter called them and withdrew from consideration because he was taking the Wake job. So it's true, the MD staff probably knew before I did, by a few hours.

But given the reason for that, I think we came out on top.

Smile
Some much for guesses. Or is it
assumptions vs presumptions?

Somewhere in this web site, indicates a VA attorney, (while Trepfan has another and maybe different vocation). (Since it appears to be so, whom is grumpier?) Smile

For College Baseball:

UVa & UNC is on top (and this is unarguable).

BC has risen, while DU is on its way up.

UMd is not above the water line, yet not sinking, guessing status quo.

WFU sunk to the bottom. NCS is sinking.

UNO appears in an elimination era (in two years)
which was the prime motivator for TW to land on his feet as quickly as possible.

A best of things about College Baseball, is the SEC is the top conference (and this is not a guess and is unarguable).

Every February, all collegiate teams have a fresh and exciting new beginning (and are undefeated!) This too is unarguable.

TW received WF offer on June 12. He (and his family) were unable to refuse. (Private school vs public state school labor rates).

Much can be learned with Hares and Turtles.

The Hares started the race soon after the 2009 season completion. (This is unarguable.) The Turtles delayed start about 1 month (and maybe five years Smile)

A guess is the Turtles sweep in 2011. (This is arguable.)

Is this a great game or what?
