Last night, playing on a field with no lights, we went to the 9th inning. The fact that the wind was blowing 50 mph in from left and it was just a terrible night for baseball doesn't really matter (I swear I saw a fly ball to center get blown foul).

The visiting team scored three runs in the top of the 9th. Clearly, the home time was stalling as the light continued to depart. We were probably within 5 pitches from unplayable conditions when the last out was recorded.

The visiting team was not throwing the ball around, didn't warm up after the top of the 9th and was clearly in 'hurry up mode'. The home team was taking two strikes.

So the question, is the game suspended or revert to the last inning or scored a tie or a do over? I heard all four being talked about in the stands by both teams.

Is this a local thing or covered under high school rules?

Why aren't lights standard equipment? Don't answer that one as I'm sure $ are the reason.

NFHS 4-2:

ART. 3 . If weather or darkness interferes with play so that the game is called (ended) by the umpire, it is a regulation game:
a. if five full innings have been played, or if the home team has scored an equal or greater number of runs in four or four and a fraction turns at bat than the visiting team has scored in five turns at bat; or
b. if play has gone beyond five full innings.
If the game is called when the teams have not had an equal number of completed turns at bat, the score shall be the same as it was at the end of the last completed inning; except that if the home team in its half of the incomplete inning, scores a run (or runs) which equals or exceeds the opponent’s score, the final score shall be as recorded when the game is called.

ART. 4 . A state association may adopt game-ending procedures that determine how games are ended, including suspended games......

So if the game hasn't gone at least to the top of the fifth, the game is "no contest", unless the state has decided otherwise.
In a called game, if both teams have had an equal opportunity in batting, or the home team is ahead or tied while they are batting, the score stands (including a tie). If the visitors are ahead, the score reverts to the last inning.

I haven't quoted all the relevant rules here. But since you'll be buying a rule book......
