NFHS Rules. The batter hits a fair ball down the right field line and the ball kicks into dead ball territory and the base umpire sees it go onto dead ball territory and raises his hands and declares "Dead Ball" BUT the right fielder picks up the ball and tries to make a play on a runner. My question is isn't the ball "Dead" when the umpires declares it dead? What NFHS Rule/Case would cover this?

Dead is dead. It can't be resurrected.
Thanks Dash..I had a fellow umpire talk to me about this situation and the UIC changed his mind ... I was looking thru Rule 5 in the casebook but couldn't find anything!
If the umpire declares "Dead Ball", all should remove their hats and pay their respect to the ball.
Ump holds his hands up an yells "dead ball!", the RF can throw it into the stands at that point and no runners can advance.
I've been going thru the rule book and case book and I can't find a darn thing and I don't have any hair!

It's 5-1-1-h. The BU effectively called time.
Thanks Dash...thats the only one I had that I thought was close !
To many umpires fall for the "if the fielder plays it then we keep it live" myth. That's only going to be true if we don't know / cant tell if the ball has entered dead ball territory or not - then if the fielder play sit were going to assume it has remained in live ball terrotory. Once it has entered or is judged by the umpire to have entered, then its dead and bases are awarded accordingly.

Unless it's a Zombie ball
And we award bases from the runner closest to home plate first!
