Just read this and it seems like a re-run of what so many of us here have been living and breathing since the spring.  I think because so few care about college baseball in general, our plight has largely flown under most people's radar.  That surely won't be the case with football. I think the NCAA is going to get absolutely hammered over this decision.

This is might seem like a dumb question, but do all football players get an extra year, even the ones who’s season is not canceled?

My understanding is that it applies to ALL players, even if they play.  Imagine the outrage from Nick Saban, Kirby Smart and Greg Sankey if the big10 was allowed "extra years of eligibility" and  "unlimited" rosters but the SEC wasn't.  You would hear the NCAA's death knell as soon as they made that announcement.

I understand that schools and coaches CAN go a different direction if they want to, but look at what the 99.9% who DIDN'T go a different direction for college baseball.  There's a precedent in place.  So imagine the headaches and problems that stem from a university taking starkly different approaches from sport to sport at their own institution.  "That's not what you did for baseball!  This isn't fair!  You need to treat all student athletes the same way!"  And if they don't acquiesce?  "You'll be hearing from our attorney!"  It's amazing the way the NCAA pawned off all the tough decisions/dirty work on to the schools and coaches.

I can almost understand the NCAA making this decision last spring. Everything was chaos. No one knew how things would shake out. But with 4 months to reevaluate that decision, they came up with the same conclusion? Someone is going to lose a year of playing time; nothing can be done about that. By trying to accommodate the unfortunate few who lost the COVID year, they're impacting everyone for the next 4 years. Doesn't make any sense to me.

Just a side note, what happens to all the NCAA cumulative career records? Some athletes get 5 seasons to pile up stats when everyone else has always had 4 at most?

C'mon folks.   This the NCAA.   Did you really think they were going to do what is right, fair and in the best interest of all "athlete-students"?   Things were right as they were.   Athlete-students had 5 years to play 4 if they got hurt.   This moved the talent pipeline along.  It gave some the opportunity to become professional athletes and others to play college sports and pursue a career outside sports.  Recently, there has been no consistency or common theme coming out of the NCAA's policies when it is most needed universally by its athlete-students.
