Report: Adenhart to make MLB debut Thursday

The Los Angeles Times reports that Nick Adenhart will be called up from Triple-A to make his major league debut Thursday night against the A's.
A 21-year-old former first-round pick who is 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA at Triple-A, Adenhart will be working on just three days rest after tossing 98 pitches over eight innings of one-run ball Sunday. Manager Mike Scioscia said Wednesday that Adenhart will likely make three starts, filling a rotation spot until John Lackey returns from the disabled list. He's one of the better right-handed pitching prospects around and is worth grabbing in AL-only leagues. May. 1 - 9:10 am et

Just in the interest of accuracy, that report is not entirely correct. Nick was not drafted in the first round. Kind of a stickler about that at times.

Nick was a sure first round talent entering his final high school season. We had him ranked right near the top of that class. He was an Aflac All American and I will never forget a matchup between him and Eric Hurley at the fall WWBA in Jupiter. Hurley (another Aflac All American) became a first round pick by the Royals, I believe.

Anyway, Nick had an arm injury that required TJ surgery his final year. The Angels still drafted him in the 14th round and paid him second round money. He rehabbed in 2004.

Nick was in our home town of Cedar Rapids in 2006. He went 10-2 with a very low ERA before being promoted to High A where he finished 5-2 = 17-4 on the year.

IMO, He has the ability to become an outstanding Major League pitcher, but I wouldn’t expect miracles right from the beginning. Sure am hoping for them though! I do think he is going to figure it out and he has the talent and makeup to do that.

The one thing that has always impressed me the most about Nick, besides having a great arm, is his ability to make the big pitches when he has to. He can get behind in the count and get the ground ball out or get ahead and get the K. He does not give in to hitters and pitches well with men on base.

Deldad, sorry if I jinxed him, you know we will be pulling for him.
Congrats,
I think the Angels have found a good opportunity to let him wet his feet at the mlb level without the pressure of his thinking that he's going for a roster spot at this point in the season given that Lackey will be filling that spot soon.

Hope he throws well and if the Angels can get a win or two out of his starts, that'd be icing on the cake.
I have been a fan of Nicks since HS and followed his progress since then. Quite a few years ago, I figured out by a post that Deldad was Nick's father. If memory serves me correctly, it was kind of a negative post and that always catches my attention when someone posts negatively about a player.
I think a lot of Nick's success from his surgery is due to the fact that his rehab was assisted by a MLB team. As I had stated before, your success depends largely on who you rehab with.

Congrats to Nick and Deldad.

Thanks everybody. What a great night. Little rough after a great start. I was surprised they pitched him on short rest, three days, but every thing is a learning experience. I didn't realize he was the youngest pitcher in major league baseball, and considering that he lost a year to TJ surgery, it made it even more astounding. Looks like he will get to make another start. Still has things to work on but I couldn't be prouder. I wish I could express in words the depths of his disappointment the day after he got injured and the pride I have of his bulldogged determination to make his dream come true.

Ranks as one of the three best days of my life.
deldad,
What a week for your son and family. Congratulations on getting past that step that looked liked it might occur when they broke camp.
Pretty clearly, this is the first step and many more should follow.
I was talking with out son last night. He faced Nick in 2006 and said at that point, even with the youth, you could tell he was very special.
Here is hoping you enjoy every second of this achievement with lot's more enjoyment to follow.
Looking forward to his start tonight (Tuesday) ... we don't go to the games, even tho they are just 10 miles away ... but we watch on our big screen and I just know the 2nd start is going to be great. He is to be greatly admired for overcoming the initial adversity in his pro career (surgery) and to have made it where so many young men wish they could be.

deldad ... enjoy the ride !!!
Woohoo, Nick looked good! Lots of first-pitch strikes; lots of movement on his pitches. He threw 4-1/3 innings and left the game with his Angels leading 4-3. Although the next pitcher (Oliver) got credit for the win (final score 5-3), I thought Nick made a very good showing for his second MLB start. Heck, I would have awarded the win to him, Big Grin but he looked like he should get plenty more chances to rack up the W's at this level!
