Is this tantamount to saying the ump erred by not ejecting Dempster after the HBP?
All - Yes, that is a fair penalty for intentionally throwing at somebody. I've got no problem with it. I'm just glad one of our good pitchers wasn't stupid enough to do it.
Green Light - I think MLB is saying exactly that. This ump missed the call, but MLB is correcting the ump.
No, they are not.......
The rule provides the umpire these choices based on his judgment....
If, in the umpire’s judgment, such a violation occurs, the umpire may elect either to:
1. Expel the pitcher, or the manager and the pitcher, from the game, or
2. may warn the pitcher and the manager of both teams that another such pitch
will result in the immediate expulsion of that pitcher (or a replacement) and
the manager.
If, in the umpire’s judgment, circumstances warrant, both teams may be officially
“warned” prior to the game or at any time during the game.
here is what the league is doing....its at the end of the rule......
(League Presidents may take additional action under authority provided in Rule
9.05)
The umpire ruling was within his judgement based on the choices the rule book gave him.
Now there is always a group of people who want to put this on the back of the umpire.....when this occurs, if you throw the pitcher out immediately without a warning there will be a group who condemns the umpire for over stepping your bounds or trying to , and I have yet to find a coach or pitcher after an ejection for throwing at a batter who didn't try and say "it just slipped" .....
If we warn both teams, you get grief for not "letting them play" or "let them settle it" on the field or over stepping..... and I understand that by warning both teams you have effectively stopped the one team from retaliating and making it equal......but the goal is to stop it...
And i really don't have a problem with that, if I feel that that the pitcher definitely or deliberately threw at a player, Ill toss him, if i don't, I warn both teams...........because I don't have a league president or commissioner to institute additional action....
