My son plays for a Massachusetts High School and so follows MIAA rules. In yesterday's game the coach, (between innings) decides to make a pitching change. At the time, his pitcher is not hitting in lieu of a DH. The coach's move goes like this: when the players take the field, the kid who had been playing SS moves to pitcher, a player from the bench moves to shortstop and the pitcher is out of the game. I was an innocent bystander but sort of have a reputation as a "baseball guy", so an assistant coach came to me at the backstop and asks "What happens now?" The question was: are they still allowed to have the DH hit for the new SS who had taken the previous P's spot in the lineup, or does the new SS hit and the DH removed from the game? My best guess (and I made it clear that's what it was) was that they lose the DH and the new SS hits in his place. Was I right? Anyway, that's how they did it and no one complained except the DH. And no, i don't know why they didn't ask the ump instead of me.

The DH was batting for the Pitcher. Now the DH is still batting in the same position in the batting order but now for the SS (the player from the bench). The SS who is now the Pitcher stays in the same batting position he was in before the switch.
The changes are the player from the bench is playing SS and the previous SS is now Pitching. Dh stays put.
