Simple. Either the starting defensive player or the starting DH can come out and re-enter in the same slot of the batting order.

A starting DH may re-enter for any subsequent DH or defensive player, and vice versa. If a former DH plays defensively, or a former defensive player bats, the DH is terminated.

If either one takes the other's place, the DH is terminated, but the player that has stayed in still has not left the game. The player that was removed still has re-entry privileges.

Funny you should post this because I was coming here just for this situation from tonight. I think we got away with one and it falls directly under this rule.

Johnny is our DH and Frank is the left fielder and this is the 6 spot in the lineup. About the 5th inning Johnny doubles but he's not a very fast runner so we send Frank into the game to run. Ends up not scoring and we head to the field in the 7th inning and Frank goes back out to LF while Johnny is beside me on the bench.

Goes to extra innings and Frank is coming back up to hit. So we go with Bobby to hit for him and he gets out. In the next half inning when we go to the field Frank still goes back into LF. Few more innings go by and Frank is coming back up to hit again and we're trying to figure out what to do. But game ends before he came back up.

Was what we did legal with Frank going back out to the field? He never came out of the game until he was pinch hit for so I'm still under the impression he has a re-entry left since he was a starter.

Bobby was done as soon as Frank took the field because he was a sub off the bench when he pinch hit.

IF Frank would have came back up again we could have used the original DH Johnny to hit for Frank again because he still has a re-entry left. But if we do this then Frank is done because he's been subbed once and Johnny either takes the field or is replaced by another guy off the bench. In this case Johnny is done for the night because he's already been out once.

So now that I type it out I don't think we got away with one.....assuming everything I typed was legal.

Does any of this make sense?

All looks legal to me. Johnny and Frank were each replaced only once, and neither of them were on the field nor in the offensive lineup at the same time.
Thanks Matt - reason why I thought we got away with one initially is we were trying to figure out if we could bring back the DH Johnny as the DH after Frank came in. I was saying he could because he had a re-entry left but it wasn't hitting me that once LF Frank came in that killed the DH spot.

So as we were debating this Frank goes on back out in the field because we never told him any different. Then we realized it and started thinking he wasn't supposed to be out there because of the pinch hit.

So I was wrong-ish in the game - no more DH but the guy playing DH could come back due to having a re-entry left.

You guys don't get paid enough if you have to keep up with all that.
