1st year assistant baseball coach.. football is my main sport coaching.

I am DH for my catcher in the 5 hole.

in the 4th inning I move my DH to RF and the RF to pitch.

So its my understanding this kills the DH because he assumes a defensive position but he has to continue to hit in the same spot, therefore the catcher cannot hit becasue he is in the same spot in the lineup. (5 hole)

so what are my options?

the DH cannot switch positions like a regular defensive starter correct?

for example I cant move the LF to DH and DH to LF even though it does not effect the batting order correct?

But the player being DH'd for can enter the batting line up in any position if you have the DH enter defensively... but you then lose the DH. The substitution would be C for the player coming out and C taking over his spot in the line up. Be advised though, if you want to re-enter the fielder taken out, you will then lose your catcher.

right..so using the same scenario above if I put in a new catcher..where does he hit?

he cannot hit in the 5 hole becasue the DH that is now in LF is in that spot..and that was the catchers (not position but player) spot on the lineup card.

would somebody else have to come out?

and am I correct in assuming that a DH cannot freely switch positions or roatate as a RF or anyo other position player can play a different defensive position every inning if desired.

The DH is not allowed free substitution into defensive spots as he is solely allowed to hit for one player and only 9 batters are allowed. Free substitution would only be allowed if there were 10 spots in the line up and that would make the DH an EH, which isn't allowed by NFHS rules.

The catcher would be hitting in the position of the player who was leaving the game, as that is what the actual substitution is offensively.

No.  Both the DH and the player he is hitting for are locked into the same place in the batting order.  If the DH enters the game defensively (role of DH terminated), the player he is hitting for must leave.

There was a whole lot of mish-mash between OBR and HS rules in this thread (and even some "EH" rules!).

Dash has it right though -- in HS, the DH and the player-being-DH'd-for can't both be on offense or both be on defense at the same time.  And, when they bat, they have to bat in that specific spot in the lineup.

So to go back to the OP: "

If you do this, you need to put another catcher in the game in the batting spot of the starting pitcher.

The lineup was (the rest of the spots don't matter):

1.  Abel  F9

2.  Baker F1

3.  Charlie DH / Davis F2

The lineup now is:

1.  Abel F1

2.  Jackson F2

3.  Davis F9

and you do not have a DH "position" anymore
