This past week the fans in Philly have been going crazy over the Donavan McNabb situation(Football)---he was removed last week after the first half because he was having a bad game---in baseball when that happens they bring in relief pitcher and life goes on--in this case they claim he, McNabb, was "benched"---are starting pitchers termed benched when removed ?

Certainly two different trains of thought here----interesting , at least to me---your thoughts---why is one termed a "benching" and the other not?

In football the starting quarterback is, barring injury, expected to go the distance and finish the game.

In baseball the starting pitcher is usually not expected to finish the game.

The quarter back is benched and the pitcher is relieved!

Now what about the pitcher who is relieved well before he normally would be because of poor performance? Benched?
