If he signs with a DII, it is correct that he can sign with a JUCO or NAIA, but not with a DI unless he obtains a release from the DII.

Another consideration, if he were to sign with the DII and then go JUCO, for instance, he would still be obligated to the DII for one year or sit out one year if transferring to another NCAA school.

Although there are specific instances where one might have good reason to sign a letter of intent and then pursue another avenue, it is not a decision to be taken lightly.

Is there any interest being shown by DI or NAIA? Or is you son hoping for something other than the DII? Is the DII deficient in some way as far as your son is concerned? If there are strong doubts about the DII program being a good fit for him, that should probably tell you something. If that were the case, I would advise against signing the NLI at this time.
