Son is a junior pitcher at a DIII school. Was a member of the team as a freshman, but didn't appear in a game. Pitched in 6 games as a sophomore, knock on wood will throw substantial innings this season and next and graduate in 2020.

I think I asked this question a couple years ago, but I'm under the impression that not having pitched as a freshman he'd have a year of DI eligibility as a grad student if he wanted to pursue that elsewhere. He seems to think otherwise based on people he's talked to.

Anyone here have the definitive answer, or can point me to where he can find it or who he needs to check with for confirmation?  Assuming he does have the additional year, anyone familiar with the process for reaching out to coaches/being recruited?

I'm pretty sure DI would consider his freshman year a redshirt year (even though D3 doesn't), but I would call NCAA or talk to Rick about it. This is from the current DI manual:

12.8.3 Criteria for Determining Season of Competition.
12.8.3.1 Minimum Amount of Competition. Any competition, regardless of time, during a season in an intercollegiate sport shall be counted as a season of competition in that sport, except as provided in Bylaws
12.8.3.1.1, 12.8.3.1.2, 12.8.3.1.4, 12.8.3.1.5 and 12.8.3.1.6. This provision is applicable to intercollegiate athletics competition conducted by a two-year or four-year collegiate institution at the varsity or subvarsity level. (Revised: 1/11/94, 4/28/05 effective 8/1/05, 5/9/06, 1/16/10 effective 8/1/10, 7/31/14, 6/13/18 effective 8/1/18 for competition that occurs on or after 8/1/18)

"Competition" means you played in a game.

Assuming he has one more year, he should be able to play immediately with a 14.6.1 One-Time Transfer Exception for graduate students who are attending a different school.
