Ok, since every other 4A and 5A district has had at least one topic I thought it was about time we heard from 6-5A. PD prompted me to post on a different topic so I brought it over to here.

I would imagine that Kettler will get some starts or he will be the closer...or both. If he is the #1 or #2 I don't have any idea. He could be the #1 if that is what Coach English asked him to be and the coach thought was best for the team. As for Jacob Morris, maybe his mom will read this and post the actual date - the sooner the better though. From what I read last year, he moved to Coppell around March 10th or so, a year from that date would be the earliest. The final UIL appeal ruling was April 25 but you have to think that it will be earlier than that date by a few weeks...at the latest.

Beast - Toth is a ballplayer and Coach English always finds time and swings for a ballplayer. I don't think he starts at the beginning of the season but by the end of the season I would be surprised if he wasn't in the line-up every game.

Overall Pre-Season re-cap.

Coppell should win more than they lose in 6-5A, really an 8-6 record will get them into the playoffs. That in itself will be hard work. Once in the playoffs how far this team goes will depend on how well the pitching staff has developed. A solid #1 and #2 will be required to make it out of the first round because the match-up calls for 6-5A to play 5-5A again, so Coppell would play Colleyville Heritage or Keller etc. If that happens then the length of the playoff run will depend on how the senior step-up and lead the team by example.

Pitching is good and deep but it will remain to be seen if one or two pitchers step-up to be very good. Coppell has 3 or 4 lefties (Nieder,Reynolds,Apple) and 4 or 5 righties (Kettler,Morris,Malone,Hermans,Abbott) that can compete at the 5A level. That will give Coach English lots of options. I think I forgot a couple of pitchers - no offense meant to those players or parents.

Hitting, solid line-up at least 6 deep (Elkins, Reynolds, Kettler, Walsh, Richardson, and Morris,) maybe more with some surprises (Toth). I think a monster year could be had by both Kettler and Walsh. There are also a couple of seniors that have been waiting their turn and I expect they will step-up and have solid years as well.

Team Speed: +++

Team Defense: Very good to excellent, up the middle they say makes a club's defense, Walsh at catcher, Kettler at SS, Higgonbotham at 2nd and Trudell / Morris in center. +++++. Elkins has a year at third under his belt and will be much better, Reynolds moves for center to right and I don't know who wins a race between Reynolds, Morris, Trudell and Garber (left field). I don't expect too many fly balls to land in the outfield. To hit a double on this crew will require some line shots...and even some of those will be ran down into outs.

Overall this is a sound team and they will have fun playing baseball together. But after having watched last year in 6-5A baseball, football and this year in basketball I'm not sure if a team like Newman Smith doesn't beat a few teams including Coppell and get into the playoffs. For that matter Flower Mound and Lewisville could go 12-2 and run away from the rest of the District making it hard on the rest of the teams to win that 3rd and 4th playoff spot. JMHO - MD

Meatsdad...what have you been smoking??? Coppell will finish 1st (Jason ****** has them #13 in the state). Hebron should finish #2. It is anyone's guess whether Marcus or FMHS will finish 3 and 4 or 4 and 3.

Morris played his last game at the Ball Park in Arlington last year with FMHS around March 25th. His first game back this season is against FMHS (go figure). It should be another fun year in North Texas HS baseball.
Since my buddy MD jumped into the water, I will do the same and offer a look at Hebron.

But first of all. . .Coppell enters the season as the district favorite. Fourth place? Yeah, maybe if they were in the AL East with the Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays they might finish fourth just ahead of the Rays and Baltimore Orioles.

As for Hebron. . .the preseason has been a somewhat pleasant surprise. The team has one pitcher that hurled more than two innings at the varsity level last season, and he is probably third or fourth on the list of starting pitching candidates as we approach the start of the season. Pitching was, and remains, a question mark for this team. But certainly, success in the preseason has at least offered the team some hope that maybe the pitching will be better than anyone associated with the team originally anticipated. The three main Tuesday/Friday starting contenders at this point were all JV pitchers a year ago, and they are names probably not familiar with posters on these boards but every bit deserving of some recognition: junior RHP Ben Neyen, and seniors RHPs Ryan Angus and Troy Padmore. Neyen, especially, looked sharp in two innings or work at Keller and a perfect first inning of work Monday (two strikeouts) against Colleyville Heritage. Hebron and Heritage played just six innings Monday afternoon as both have games Thursday and wanted to save their pitching.

Jon McManemin, the only returning varsity pitching from last season, will probably be called on to close games.

Hitting figured to be Hebron's strength, and it probably still will be although I hope to see more consistency during the regular season than the up-and-down swings of the preseason. Sometimes the hitters seem to get too selective and have to take their cuts with two strikes and against the pitcher's best pitch. But in time, they will get their hits. First-year varsity senior Dustin Tarpley has been the exception, swinging the bat well over the four scrimmages. The heart of the order J. McManemin, P. Kocher, R. Payne, M. Putman and E. McCarver will be relied upon to continue driving in runs. If they are "on," this team will score runs - I just hope it's more runs than they give up. If the sticks are silent, it could be a tough time.

Even with plus pitching, if that's what the Hawks get, this team goes only as far as its bats will take it.

Flower Mound is still the team to beat. *cliche alert* They never rebuild, they just reload.

I would give my 2 cents on Coppell, but I'm very biased toward that group. Wink Let's just say, watch out for the Cowboys and I'll leave it at that.

Hebron has the sticks to make things tough on opposing pitching; they have some good arms over there too. They also have something to prove after the final game last year.

Marcus will be in there as well. They never give up and play pretty sound baseball.

Does Marcus still have the "ex-marine" head coach? I hear he's a great guy, but watching him coach his team makes my blood boil!! That's all I'll say about that. His approach works, because he won his 400th game last year, so I'm not knocking his coaching ability I promise.

Coach English is a true gentleman and has respect for his senior outfielders. The preview is a good look at the team that covers the first 5 weeks. When JM is allowed to play I am sure Coach English will find him a spot. I would expect that he also doesn't want JM to feel any added pressure upon his return to the Varsity line-up so he won't starting pressing. The team also has to focus on being as good as they can be without JM (which would be pretty good) so that they have momentum built-up prior to his joining the team as he will be an addition to an already working model. This team might move from pretty good to something special at that point.

L.A. - I'm not sure how you can say Flower Mound is the team to beat. They just went 0-3 in their Houston Tournament this weekend. It looks like it is going to be a long season!
My reasoning is based on they are the defending district champions and their junior varsity went 19-1-1 last year. In addition, they have a long standing tradition of playing pretty good baseball and they always seem to get very talented players coming out for their program.

On another note, keep an eye Zak Hermans from Coppell. Very bright future ahead of him.
