HD - You're question included whether there was a guideline.  Would love coaches to chime in, but in our experience in several sports, it often becomes one of two formats:  a round robin to make sure all teams are represented or a cram-down by the heavy hitters.  Neither situation leads to the best players being selected at each position.  If your district has a non-political situation, you are blessed!  If your son is selected under ANY format above, you are also blessed!  Congrats to all!!

Every district I've ever been a part of, we take turns going first to nominate players.

First thing you take care of are the superlatives...here are the ones we did this year...

MVP

Offensive MVP

Defensive MVP

Utility player of the year (someone that excelled at more than one position)

Newcomer of the year

Sophomore of the year

Freshman of the year

After that, we went position by position.

Coaches nominate their own players, but CAN NOT vote for their own player.

We do first team, then go back around for 2nd team. Coaches can then give whomever else they want HNR Mention.

Here are my thoughts. To the victors goes the spoils. The best teams should have the most players, otherwise how are they winning? Can't be coaching...right? (please note heavy dose of sarcasm in the last statement)  For example, in 2011 and 2012 when I was in Sherman, we finished 2nd and 1st. Both years one of my players won MVP, one was named Pitcher OTY, and we had 2 other guys get 1st team all-district, 2-3 others get 2nd team.

This year at North Crowley we finished 7th out of 8 teams. I had 2 kids hit over.400 in district, no one else above .300 (I know...yikes). When everyone else is nominating kids at all positions for 1st and 2nd team that have batting averages (not that BA is the end all be all stat) over .300, then guess how many kids I'm going to nominate for 1st and 2nd team...yes, 2. We finished in 7th place! I'm not going into an all-district meeting expecting to have my guys all over it. I went in wanting to get my .400 hitters something. IF..the numbers gave some of my other guys a chance I'll put them up. If not, then we should have done better.

There are tough choices to make, especially when it comes to MVP, and Offensive MVP. If the numbers are close, then I will vote for the guy that hurt us the most. Even then, it can still be a coin flip. Every year there are very deserving kids that get left off. I've left meetings saying, wow, I didn't expect to get so and so that...or I can't believe we got that many kids something. I've also left meetings feeling like my kids got hosed. I've had to sit kids down and try to explain to him why they didn't get 1st or 2nd team.

Great insight, Coach.  Thanks for letting us take a peek behind the curtain.

Thanks Coach, appreciate your honesty and agree completely with how you go about your selections.  It's ashame that all coaches don't take the same approach.  Good Luck next year.

Its a shame that most if not all is based on offensive stats.  Only 1 award for Defensive Player of the Year and all the rest are pretty much pushed by the offensive numbers other than the Pitchers award.  I would nominate a .300 + hitter with a .950 fielding percentage at 200 chances, over a .400 hitter with .650 fielding percentage with 100 chances anyday.
