If you are looking to watch some baseball this weekend the District II 15U Babe Ruth tournament takes place at North Common field in Nashua (behind Holman). Londonderry vs Concord at 2pm and Manchester vs Nashua at 5pm. Come see some of the up and coming talent in southern NH baseball. A lot of these kids will be playing varsity for their respective school if they already haven't been like Welch for Manchester. Games at 2pm (Loser bracket) and 5pm (Winners bracket)on sunday as well!!

North Common isn't the greatest field to hold a tournament but it is bigger then our other Babe Ruth field, that one is only 293ft around the outfield.

In our two tournament games there were no homeruns. Had the wind not been blowing in on Tuesday as the front was going by there might have been several but they all got knocked back by the wind.

Did Clay pitch on Friday? Other then his wild 1st inning against us, 3 hit batters and several walks leading to the 4 runs in the 1st he really settled down and battled the rest of the way.

My son pitched in the heart breaking 2-1 loss to Concord on Tuesday. Gave up one unearned run through 6 innings only to see us give up another unearned run in the 7th to lose it. He matched Clay hit batter for hit batter as well in his start plunking 3 himself..lol. Those hard throwers lose their release points from time to time..lol.

Good luck to Manchester next weekend at States!!
Livingston is 370ft??? My son put one out to dead center in a JV game this past season against Trinity I believe. Ball just carried and ended up on the hill behind the fence. That was a tough ball to retrieve for his first high school homerun..lmao!!

I didn't think it was quite that far.

Son will be trying out for the showcase league this fall. worse case scenario he makes their new Development league. Will probably join a Varsity team (Extra Innings or something as North doesn't field a team) as well so that he plays both days of the weekend. Will just need to watch the innings.

Son really wanted a shot at you guys on Friday (but we forgot to win our games to get there..lol)..and was really disappointed he didn't get the shot. But coaches make the decisions on who gets to start when. It would have been a nice match up of two of the hardest throwing 15's in the state had he been able to get the start against you guys on Sunday in game # 1! Lot of bruises on the batters though...lol!

You guys get Keene for your first game on Saturday in Rochester. hope you destroy them!! They were the top team in Cal Ripken in the state, so we had many battles with them over the years.

Rochester's team was out in Cooperstown when we were a few years back (Aug 2007) we both did NH proud as were 6-0 and they ended up 5-1 in pool play so not surprised that they are still good.

Where is Clay looking to play fall ball this fall?

We got booted too quickly to ever see Moloney pitch but after seeing his results from the Londonderry Pitching Showcase I'd say he is quite the hard throwing 15 as well! Was he a Sophomore or Freshman this past school year? The kid from Nashua throws 80-84 nowadays a tick below Welch from seeing him pitch. He is a lefty as well and was only a freshman this past season.
Against Concord in the Losers Bracket Final, I had Maloney topping out at 85 MPH and was a consistant 82-84 MPH for his 4 innings of work. In the opening day game Manchester vs. Nashua, I had Welch topping out at 86 MPH and was a consistant 82-85 MPH throughout the entire game. Major props for battling back after that horrendous first inning. I, as well as almost everyone else thought he was done.

These two players are very similar when you compare them. Maloney was still hitting 84 MPH when he needed it in the later innings. Same goes for Welch who hit 85 MPH multiple times in the 6th and 7th inning.

Good luck to Manchester in the State tournament this weekend.

re: Livingston -- dead center may be less than the 370 mark... but on average that's what the Manchester fields stand at (Prout has dead center at 430!) Clay just said Livingston dead center is about 315 -- shortest part of that field.

re: Fall Ball -- we're tossing around the idea of either Showcase League or the Varsity on Sundays. The rub is, he would only pitch (how much tbd) and that's it... bottom line, he loves playing baseball and wants to field and hit. Also, it comes down to whether he's really interested in the colleges they'd be attending. Will be talking to those that run this more for their opinions.

re: Keene... Clay pitched yesterday against Keene, threw a No Hitter with 14Ks.

Clayton Welch struggled to find the strike zone when they brought him in. Not to say Clayton is not hard throwing. Never saw the kid from nashua pitch.

I was impressed with Moloney as well. He had some good pop when he came into the final inning of championship game#1. Manchester jumped on him early in game#2 but I think the break between games is what killed him there.

Clay was left hanging unfortunately by coaching. You don't let a kid who doesn't have it that day BB the entire line-up. There were some umpire issues on a visit to the mound that didn't help... that's why Clay didn't take the mound in the game 2 championship... figured they were going to squeeze him being the same crew.
I figured Livingston couldn't be 370' to centerfield. I had figured 320' on his home run...so I'm guessing I was really close.

Awesome job destoying Keene!! Puts a smile on my face..lol!

Son got to play with a CDP team out of New York on Thursday. That was a blast, though he was facing a team of players heading to college next year. Most to D1's. He did ok considering he is only 15 and can't even legally drive yet (Must be 15 1/2 in NH to start learning to drive...no permits (for those outside of NH)) He did K 3 of them which was cool and didn't K himself..lol.

I think Clay can tryout as more then just a pitcher. Can always talk to them about it. I think I might have son just play on Sat or sunday to protect his arm this fall. This is the most he has ever pitched.

Good luck in States!! Keep us up to date..I care to hear at least.

FYI for parents who might have read this post and gotten the wrong impression.

Most players in the Showcase League also play in the Varsity League. Showcase League is on Saturday's, Varsity League is on Sundays.

Also the schools one the schedule are not the only schools that come out to the games. Examples: we don't play @BC or Northeastern and they are out every season. This will be our first year at UConn but they've been out every year also. We go to Southern Vermont which is a small school that maybe only a few guys might be interested in, howevr at Southern Vermont last year we had Siena, U Albany, Springfield, Becker, and more. You go to URI you get a whole mess of Rhode Island schools etc.

And it gets better every year, I've already heard from Notre Dame saying they will have someone out to one of our games this fall.
The fact that Notre Dame is saying they will come out isn't surprising as their new head coach was at BC the past few years. He knows that there is talent up here in NH.

Of course with the coaching change I wonder how that affects Nick Poore who HAD a verbal to go to BC but that was with the former coaching staff. Wonder if Notre Dame will be making a push for him now or if the new BC regime will let him know they will honor the verbal commitment. Anyone know how that is playing out? Just curious as to how a coaching change affects a verbal.
SAWit - Congrats to Clayton on his no-hitter against Keene. I just saw the small write up in the Union Leader. He was certainly jipped getting the back page. When a kid at 15 throws a no-hitter in a state tournament with 14 strike outs he should be getting more than a little back page article. The Union Leader is by far one of the worst paper's in NH in my opinion.

Redsox8191 - Did your son play up at all this year? How did he fare pitching wise at either level?
detroits1980,

Not sure what you mean by play up. He did pitch JV some this past season but it wasn't a whole lot. Nashua North was backed up pitching wise this season with McGowan, Morency and Turner at the Varsity level, Mellin, Lipkind and a few others at the JV level. He did dress for most JV games as well as the Freshman games but most of his innings came at the freshman level. He did dominate at that level only allowing 2 unearned runs the whole season and averaged just under 2K's an inning. JV wise he did ok but nothing like he did at the freshman level. Next year he should push for one of the open Varsity spots and at worse will bide his time at JV with some spot varsity work. Any other school and he likely is pitching varsity next year.

Summer ball wise he just played Babe Ruth. He only turned 15 in March.

He will tryout for the showcase league this fall.
Manchester beat Great Bay North 10-9 in 8 innings on Sunday. Great Bay jumped out early 7-2 and Manchester then brought in Chris Lekas (Central High) to settle things down. Manchester crawled back one inning at a time. Clay came off the bench in the 4th to play first and in his first at bat hit a 360' 2R HR out to left field to bring them to 7-6. Manch tied it 9-9 in the bottom of the 7th with Mike Beaudette (Trinity High 3rd Team AllState) to close out the game. Bottom of the 8th with 2 outs and clutch singles Lekas drove in the winning run.

Manchester is taking on Rochester tomorrow to see who heads into the Championship bracket. Should be a fun game... Rochester is fast on the base paths and well disciplined at the plate.

SAWit, will Clayton be pitching tomorrow in the finals? I saw he threw an inning in their winner's bracket final. If I'm not mistaken that would mean he only has 6 innings left to throw, correct?

Sorry for the late reply.. and yes he did pitch. Manchester bats gave him the early lead to let him get in a grove. He wasn't pitching his fastest... but he got the job done... tournament pitching doesn't leave much time for rest but that's the game.

Overall State Stats:
14IP; 2 Hits allowed; 6BBs; 28Ks; 1 unearned run allowed.

Hitting:
7-10 for a .700 batting average; 1HR & 5RBIs; 2SBs

Here's hoping the magic carries over to Regionals and Manchester represents the "603" properly!
Not that most here give a crud but Manchester's 13U Babe Ruth team won their regional today and are off to Texas to play in the World Series.

Congrats to the Manchester 13's who fought through the losers bracket to win two today and head to the World Series.

Hopefully Welch can help lead the 15's from Manchester to their own World Series in Arkansas.

And of course I'm pulling for the Nashua 14's to do the same come this weekend!!
