There are a number of phrases that disturb when I see them in Recruiting Forums across the board on numerous sites especially the many new " we can get you a scholarship" sites

" I understand"
" my friend told me"
"I have heard"
" I read somewhere"
"in my experience"

How much do the people really know when they use statements like these---there is no basis as to where the info comes from and how valid is it

TR
All these statements have "wiggle room".........I read, I heard, sowewhere, someone.....all give the user a "if I am wrong its wasnt me" out.....

The only one that carries weight to me is "in my experience", as that specifically identifies not only the author, but also the circumstances of the opinion...which is worth what you pay for.....

If TRHIT says "In my experience with College Select"...instant credibility....

This is where credentials come into play.........people who use those statements usually do not have the credentials ..... those that do, dont hide behind those types of wordings....
I'm guilty of using words like "based on experience" a lot.

Without qualifying what you say it can sound like it's the Gospel! By stating what you say as being based on your experience... Doesn't mean you are absolutely correct, but it does explain why you are making the statement.

Having credentials is not always the most important thing. I have good credentials, but lack good judgement at times.

What bothers me the most is when someone makes a statement that is written in such a way that it leaves no doubt about the topic or question. I much rather this be something based on "their" experience or even their opinion rather than it sounding so "expert" like. Then when that person has given some "bad" or incorrect information it doesn't sound so darn factual.

Then there really are things that have only one answer. In those cases it is not about opinion or one persons experience... It is the truth!

Figuring out which is which (fact or opinion) is the problem.
