The wildcards have added a new twist to the playoffs this year. It looks like 6 teams will be wildcards:
Santiago-Corona
Oxnard
Brea-Olinda
Mission Viejo
Hart
Temescal Canyon

That means that 8 3rd place teams and 2 4th place teams will go in the hat to see which 6 of them play a wildcard game. I'm just guessing at the process though. The biggest issue could be Oxnard who won their league before the 5 forfeits but ended up 4th. That could be a tough game for a 3rd or 4th place team that draws them and then for their first round opponent as that would really be a first place team vs first place team in the first round of the playoffs.

Norco and Capo Valley look strong. I wouldn't pick Simi to win it but I wouldn't have last year either and the team is very similar in makeup to last season's team. Royal has excellent pitching but I don't know if they've got the hitting or defense to go far.

I don't know enough about some of the OC teams to have a feel for how good they are. The Trinity league looks to have been exceptionally strong.

Looking closer it looks like there are three 7+ team leagues and seven 6 team leagues. That means that there are a total of 33 teams that made the playoffs "directly". There were also 6 teams that should have qualified for a wildcard spot. With a total of 39 teams that would require 7 wildcard games. Given that there were seven third place teams and 3 fourth place teams that qualified for the playoffs that means that 7 of the 10 will have to play a wildcard team. I assume that the third place teams from the 7 or 8 team leagues will not be included in the draw.

Just my guesses. We'll know for sure at about 1:00 PDT today. It'll be interesting to see who draws Oxnard, especially if all their players are eligible now.
Wild Card:
Moorpark v Brea Olinda - Edge to Moorpark because they are at home and Brea Olinda doesn't seem to have an overpowering pitcher.

Newbury Park v Vista Murrietta - Edge to NP for same reasons.

Temescal C. v Santiago/C - Temescal

Long Beach Wilson v Roosevelt - Wilson

ML King v Mission Viejo - Mission Viejo

Camarillo v Hart - Hart

Oxnard v Saugus - Oxnard because they are really a #1

1st round
Norco v Brea Olinda
Could be ugly

Temecula Valley v Esperanza - Temecula

Tesoro v Long Beach Poly - Tesoro

Mater Dei v Saugus - Mater Dei

Edison v Lakewood - Edison

West Ranch v El Dorado - El Dorado in an upset

Rio Mesa v Dana Hills - Dana Hills

Simi v wildcard - Simi

Capo Valley v Wilson - CV

Canyon/A v O Lutheran - Canyon

Marina v Hueneme - nice pitching matchup - Hueneme to upset

Valencia v Vista Murrietta - Valencia

Millikan v wildcard - Millikan

Royal v Villa Park - Royal

Poly/R v Chapparral - Poly/R

JSerra v Camarillo - JSerra

I'm not sure but it looks like they placed the 4th place teams in the wildcard draw then put the 3rd place teams in a hat and drew from there.

Brea-Olinda d Moorpark 1-0 ...Not a big surprise. Could have gone either way. When you play mediocre players and schedule weak opponents instead of developing talent and playing strong opponents you aren't going to be ready for playoff baseball. 13 of Moorpark's 17 wins were against teams ranked 2000 or worse in the MaxPreps rankings. The average ranking of those 17 teams was over 3000. A very nice pitching effort wasted. Moorpark will have a strong squad next season if they don't manage to misuse a strong but shallow pitching staff. They should be a contender for the league championship in what looks to be a down year for the league overall.

Vista Murrietta d Newbury Park A bit of a surprise, but NP never really had playoff quality pitching, although I thought they had enough for this game.

Saugus d Oxnard "Crime" didn't pay?

Wilson d Roosevelt

Camarillo d Hart

BOF you are right, geez the upsets are everywhere. Last year I dont think there was even one upset first round.

Top half of the bracket there is just one upset that was not really an upset. I thought Tago would pitch and his ERA is .98 and Tago did not even pitch, their catcher did.

Dana Hills beat Rio Mesa

These three are just shockers to me. And not because the winners are weak, everyone out here is good, it is just the losing teams I felt were particularly strong. That is three upsets in the lower half of the bracket. And they were all one run loses.

Temescal Canyon beat Simi in a 6-5
Vista Murrieta beat Valencia 10-9
Villa Park beat Royal 2-1
In an odd twist of fate both Channel League teams, Dos Pueblos and Santa Barbara are still playing while the Marmonte power houses are home. Frankly SB is not a very talented team, but you have to give their coaching some credit since they seem to find a way to win. DP is peaking at the right time and are hitting the stuffing out of the ball, not too good of pitching, but all it takes is to score more runs and you can move on. I think DP will win and SB will lose next round....but so far I have been clueless in my predictions.
DP had a little home cooking in their last game and the team they beat was a little flat on top of that. The other team had prom that evening and DP didn't want to reschedule. The other team would have. While Damien has a good record their schedule was not as strong as Crespi. Crespi will take good care of them if DP gets that far.

From the paper this morning. MTS: looks like Crespi snuck by GGP.

DP got clobbered by Damien..I heard the ump had a really tight zone and the lack of a high velocity pitcher caught up with them, nice season for them however. SB lost and it amazes me they got this far....same with St Bonnie.

West Ranch getting clobbered is a surprise. Mater Dei moves on as expected. Will look at the remaining match ups later today and post something.

Here are the matchups:

I would think Cleveland would be heavily favored. El Camino and Chatsworth should be a great game, same with Crepi vs Damien, and Norco vs Mater Dei.

First, DBCooper is one of the best usernames I have ever seen!

Second, who could not notice that HB beat Yucaipa? Now, I know both teams and I will say HB was under rated and Yucaipa was over rated a bit.

I think it is a testament of how completely loaded the Southern California area (from the mountains to the sea and the areas between) is!

Every team out here is 14 players deep. The kids sitting on the bench are starters everywhere else.

Congrats to Yucaipa and Davidson on a great season and Congrats to HB for being hot at the right time to be hot.
playfair, you are so right in how deep SoCal is in players. NorCal too for that matter. Put together, the entire state might surpass many other goupr of states combined in talent pool. I think every team is AT LEAST 14 deep - most are 18 or more - and half are pitchers. All CIF divisions have tough teams and programs, even down to the Div VIIs. Great baseball to watch. We know Capo boys, they are tough competitors. We know Mater Dei boys, they are too. I am sure the others are also or they would not be where they are. It should be a great set of games.
Playfair, my username "escapes" many people (ugh!) You're showing your age. Smile

The reality in SoCal is that the depth of talent is unbelievable. When #3 league finishers and at-large teams are making it to the semis, knocking off nationally ranked top teams along the way, depth is the only explanation. When powerhouse Mater Dei finishes second in its league, that is a testament to just how difficult it is in SoCal to win week in and week out.

Good luck to everyone this afternoon!
D.B., I love my age, it came with wisdom. Glad to show it.

Capistrano Valley 1-0 over Riverside Poly.
Tlyer Matzek pitched well, like Tyler... Kept Riv Poly scoreless. Bottom of the 7th Riv Poly hits a leadoff double. Next batter is left handed and pulls a grounder to first base. Kevin Chambers makes the throw to third for the leadoff runner out. Runner on first 1 out. Tyler strikes out the batter and Catcher Nolan Clark picks off the runner at first to end the game!

Edsion beat Mater Dei 2-1

Pitchers duel to the 7th. Ian McCarthy for Mater Dei and sophomore Henry Owens for Edison. Bottom of the 7th McCarthy walks the two leadoff batters, after a visit from the coach McCarthy stays in the game. The #7 batter for Edison get a sac fly to advance both runners for Edison. McCarthy comes out and Blanchard comes in. Blanchard get an easy strike out and then faces the #9 guy who singles up the middle clearing a great effort by SS Campbell to win the game.

Capo V Edison Sat at Angels Stadium 7pm.
The Chino Hills players and parents were a complete class act. The kids never quit right down to the last strike and hats off to them for an incredible comeback and finish. The parents were nothing but gracious hosts during and after the game. It's a shame someone had to lose on the scoreboard, but that was the only loss of the day. All the kids should walk away from that game and experience with their heads held high and great memories that will last a lifetime.
