Congrats to each of those mentioned. I'm sure they're all quite deserving.

I know a kid who was 7-16 on the week (5 games), w/ 4 HR (2-2HR games), 1 2B, 6 RS and 13 RBI. Was the winning P in the District-clinching game on Saturday, while going 3-4 w/ 2HR and 8 rbi. But I guess that doesn't rate a mention by the DMN.

Oh well, proud anyway...so I'm mentioning it here. Gotta take advantage while I can.

I'm sure there are others deserving of mention as well.
Pamela Sue Anderson tale, huh? Insert your own joke here...

Son only wishes he were associated w/ that storyline. That's DC's franchise player who's headed there, not CS.

PD,
Come visit DC during the Spring...I think you'll be surprised at the current field conditions. And if the t-ball comment is referencing size, we had about a 20 mph wind blowing in all week. (no offense taken, btw)

By BRIAN DAVIS / The Dallas Morning News
brdavis@dallasnews.com

School: Rockwall-Heath

What he did: The right-hander threw a two-hit shutout in a Game 1 victory over Frisco Centennial. Then, Benefield went 2-for-3 with two home runs and six RBIs in Game 3 of the bi-district series as the area's seventh-ranked Class 4A team advanced to face North Dallas.

The stats: Benefield's overall numbers are somewhat misleading because he missed half the year after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery. Entering the playoffs, he was batting .233 with six RBIs. On the mound, Benefield was 2-0 with a 2.86 ERA in 14 2/3 innings.

Who is he? A 6-0, 220-pound junior catcher/pitcher.

He said it: "The first game of the series was the first time I felt good and healthy. It was really good for my confidence."

Coach said it: "As soon as he hit it, the left fielder just turned and watched to see how far it would go." – Greg Harvey, on Benefield's second home run Saturday.

Did you know? Benefield has a passion for music and plays guitar with three of his friends in his spare time. His best number is "Wagon Wheel" by Old Crow Medicine Show.

SportsDay baseball player of the week: Michael Gill

02:40 AM CDT on Monday, May 25, 2009

By BRIAN DAVIS / The Dallas Morning News
brdavis@dallasnews.com

School: Flower Mound Marcus

What he did: Gill had an impressive week as Marcus advanced to the Class 5A regional semifinals. He went 3-for-4 Tuesday to help Marcus defeat Plano in the area round. Then he threw a shutout and hit a home run in Game 1 against Plano East. Gill went a combined 4-for-8 in Games 2 and 3 as Marcus advanced.

The stats: Gill's season numbers were off the charts, especially his .478 batting average. Coach Art Senato initially had Gill batting in the No. 9 spot. But Senato flipped his No. 9 and leadoff hitters, and the switch paid off. Gill has struck out only a dozen times this season.

Who is he: A 5-10, 178-pound sophomore pitcher and outfielder.

He said it: "Nothing's really guaranteed the next day. Some people have a great game and go 4-for-4, but the next game, they could go 0-for-4. I didn't take anything for granted that I would do anything spectacular."

Coach said it: "He's played a high level of baseball pretty much his entire life, and it shows up in big games like this." – Art Senato

Did you know? When Gill was 13, he played on a select youth baseball team that traveled to Japan. ... In his spare time, Gill likes to draw. But he ends up throwing most of his drawings away before anyone can see them.

SportsDay baseball player of the week: Justin Scharf

11:53 PM CDT on Sunday, May 31, 2009

By BRIAN DAVIS / The Dallas Morning News
brdavis@dallasnews.com

School: McKinney North

Justin Scharf What he did: In a one-game playoff, Scharf pitched McKinney North to a 2-1 victory over Hallsville. The righthander didn't record a strikeout until the seventh inning, but he confused Hallsville's hitters with his sidearm delivery and relied on his defense for a complete-game victory in the Class 4A regional semifinals.

The stats: Scharf earned a complete-game victory over Bryan Adams earlier in the regional quarterfinals. He's 8-4 overall and has allowed just three runs in three playoff appearances.

Who is he: A 6-1, 170-pound senior pitcher.

He said it: "They look pretty good. We're going to have to play another defensive battle and throw strikes." Scharf on Texarkana Texas, McKinney North's next opponent

Coach said it: "We saw where [Hallsville] had some trouble with a sidearm guy in another series. He's got a different arm slot. He's just a different type guy that you haven't seen a lot of." Jim Gatewood

Did you know? Scharf used a conventional delivery until two years ago when his coaches asked him to try a submarine motion, and he developed into one of the team's top pitchers.
