So 2026 son has been randomly contacted by the the same coach numerous times since August 1, but contact just seems so...random.  Is this normal or is it "vague interest," as it seems?  Son was asked for and provided transcripts.  Then someone from the college randomly DM'd him and then showed up at a tournament he played in. Then he will not hear back for weeks or months.   Most recent message was "would love to get you to campus."

I guess I kind of just do not want him to get his hopes up too much with such random contact.  But do coaches OFTEN suggest having a student on campus?  We are pretty green about reading the contact and understanding if it is actual interest.  TIA!

In our experience and from the experience of others at our school who ultimately committed, your experience, while confusing and disconcerting, was EXACTLY what we and others experienced. While to many it might raise a flag, it appeared to be standard operating procedure where we committed. I believe it to be sincere and serious  interest and wouldn't be the least bit surprised if we're both referring to the same program... Feel free to PM.

In addition to what has been suggested, I think you need to understand there are NCAA rules around "contact" especially for a 2026.   The Kabuki dance that you are experiencing kind of sounds like they want to get to know your son better, but they are limited by current NCAA rules.   One way to get around it, is to visit campus.  This can be done a couple different ways either through the athletic dept or through admissions.   Admissions can be used as a proxy to get you into the athletic dept to speak to the coaches.   I've seen it done many different ways it just depends on the circumstances.  It seems the rules were looser back in the old days.

The contact rules and dates have changed over the years, so here are the most recent links.  Its a quick read as the NCAA likes to put lipstick (lots of pictures) on the pig.   It is a great idea to familiarize yourself with the NCAA recruiting jargon.
