You know the old saying about how players should handle themsleves at games "You never know who might be watching." I think sometimes players overlook the most obvious person on the field - the umpire.

I don't know if this is true or not, but I have been told that some umpires if they are not technically a scout, will pass along information they see concerning certain ball players that may have caught their eye. Maybe it is passing along a tip to a local college recruiter or sharing some information with a professional scout.

I would like to hear from the umpires out there. Are you a scout? Has anyone else heard of umpires who scout?

I do/have scout/ed. Although usually for my self. During my coaching years, I was honored to take several league all-star and/or tournament teams.
I would purposely take games as an umpire in which those players I was looking at were a partaking. Made for some very insightful information. Not only to see how the players played but how they reacted to various game situations.

I currently also umpire at the adult softball levels and am still a player/coach there as well, I have stolen, er, ah, discoverd, some pretty good players at the lower levels and let's say, "assisted them" to find a team at a higher level of play.

Like I've always claimed, best seat in the house..
