I was looking on a team web site and between the freshman Jv and Varsity there are 18 coaches. Head coach ,bench coach, catching coach, hitting coach, pitching coach Am I missing something here??

I couldn't complain with a team having all the angles covered rather than too few. My son's high school didn't have a coach at any level who knew pitching or catching.
Local school had no less than 8 coaches in the dugout last spring during the playoffs. Apparently the JV coaches got "called up" once their season ended.
Said school went on to win the State Championship. So I guess it worked out for them.
No report on if they needed a 2nd bus to transport all their personnel or not.

My HS and even when I was HC has 4 coaches for 3 levels. It is not uncommon to run in to teams in our area that have 8 or more.
The only way that this could be a problem is if all of the coaches aren't on the same page. Be happy that you have that many people that want to sacrifice their time to help your school's kids.
I've seen Group 1 teams here that have a single coach, especially at JV level. They usually help out with varsity so that means 2 there!
Anyways, as long as all the coaches contribute something, the more the merrier. If they just standing around holding the HC's clipboard, that's a bit much.
Are any of them dads?
I've seen that a lot on younger travel teams.
Is this a good team?
I can't imagine that many quality coaches in one area, if all these guys have a viable function I would be surprised.
my sons HS has 7 coaches, 4 for the Varsity, 3 JV. the booster club actually pays for 3 of them as the school only provides one head and one asst. i think it is money well spent for the practice time alone. do you need 4 during games...obviously not but during early season and winter workouts it is well worth the money.
When my son played HS ball, varsity had 3 coaches (HC and 2 assistants) and JV 2 coaches. They've since added a middle school team so I imagine that's two more coaches. Varsity HC usually did not "call up" the JV coaches if the team advanced to the playoffs.
At the JuCo level, his team only has 3 coaches.
Do you need that many coaches - no. Not at all.
But if you can find me that many who have a clue, willing to be part of the program and most of them do it for free (because there is no way in the world we will have enough money to pay them) then let me have them. I'll find something for them to do.
Our experience in HS and club ball is that finding a true pitching coach is pretty scarce. Son has been blessed to have very strong coaches for the most part over the past few years, but almost all are position guys by experience. There's a difference... one example is early season live bp where pitchers are told "throw 70%... and nothing off speed" to live hitters. Not that big a deal, but not really safe since hitters certainly aren't swinging at 70%. I don't think a former pitcher would run BP that way.

Nothing in HS will surprise me!
I only had an assistant a jv coach and he had an assistant.Up until the last 2 or 3 years we did not have a freshman team. when we did he was by himself. Has the game become so complicated that you have to have 13 more coaches? Humor me as I am one of those old timers who coached when dinosaurs roamed the earth.
