Hoping that someone can help populate this spreadsheet. I'm sure we're not the only people doing them . . .

Here's a hypothetical. DII offers player 20%. According to the net price calculator for the school, Total Direct Costs (T+F+R+B) = $43,000. 2013 qualifies for academic scholarships and grants, reducing his total to $22k.

So, is the athletic money 20% of $43k or 20% of $22k?

I suppose it could depend on the school/coach...but any scenario we ran into (D1s) it woulda been n% of the total cost of attendance (in your example, the full $43K).

But you should ask them. Its a completely relevant question that any coach should be happy to answer.

Anyone going through recruiting now...PLEASE don't be afraid to ask coaches virtually any question when it comes to your son and that coach's school. We took this approach and I feel we were rewarded with knowledge...LOTS of knowledge that helped us make decisions.

A D-2 offered my son in the late summer. When he got back from the visit (local school) he showed us the breakdown. They took the total cost to attend, and deducted the baseball money first. It was 15%. He then said that based on his ACT score and GPA, he could get $8000 off what was left. So they did baseball money first, then academic.

I always thought baseball money came first, but I could be wrong.

Great advice, instead of wondering in so many of these types of situations, why not just ask the one person who will give you the 100% correct answer, the coach or school. I often ask myself when reading questions on the board why parents don't just ask the coach.

Yes, this is excellent advice and we certainly will/would do so when the situation arises. As I mentioned in the original post, this is a hypothetical question because we don't understand the standard process. We're trying to estimate our net costs at a variety of schools, should any of them materialize.

Understood 2013, but while its easy to get an answer from the folks on the board, the answers are not always correct ones. I know you stipulated D2 but someone might not give you that correct percentage you are looking for as they end up answering the question from their NAIA experience which could differ. The answer you are looking for should come from the school, doesn't have to be the coach if your son was not offered at this point ...I would still suggest to call them and not rely on a post if you are sorting out financials. You will get a cleaner answer.

Exactly right! All we can do is relate our own experiences. Our own experiences sometimes (often times) don't apply to any new poster's situation.

I think this board can be quite useful for strategies and getting the extra nudge to move forward and take a little risk. But for specifics of your own son's situation...you should almost always ask the coach or school.
my suggestion is get a TOTAL cost from the school or the coach along with the academic money..plenty of times you'll find a D3 school is a better fit and cheaper than a d2 with a sports scholarship..junior had a naia school offer of 20k all in for 4 years with the sports scholarship included..he opted for a higher rated d3 school for 20,500.00..all said and done..so get the final cost.
