Any time you go undefeated in the district in the regular season, if your head coach isn't coach of the year, something is weird.

Player of the year is a tougher issue. I have opinions about who's a standout player, etc., but POY honors typically go to the guy who put up the big numbers in his 20 --er, 18 games.

The thing about Cosby, or # 2 James River for that matter, is that I don't know if any one guy has been the big dude on the team. Both teams would proudly tell you their seasons have been total team efforts. I know that I consider Luke Lowery one of the scariest hitters in town, but I have no idea what his overall stats look like. I might say the same for Manchester's Augie Ayers, or Cosby's Christian Hamlett. JR's Kit Scheetz stepped up when nobody knew who he was and has had one heckuva season on the mound, but as he almost never bats, I'm not sure he could win a POY vote.

If I were just reading RTD line score notes, it seems like Nick Conner is the guy getting it done game after game for LCB. Or is that just a misperception? I haven't had a chance to see LCB in action a lot, so I can't say. Either he's having a great season or someone's doing a great job of making sure he's in the paper every time he does something. LCB is not at the very top of the standings, but they've had a decent year and I don't know if they would have without Conner's performances.

without knowing everyone's stats I will offer that Casey Jones from JRHS and Christian Hamlet from Cosby have had HUGE offensive years from what I have seen.

- heck, I think Hamlet has 4 homeruns this week!!!

As for pitcher of the year - Scheetz is in the conversation and so is Travis McQueen. McQueen has been very consistant and given Cosby the chance to win every time he has taken the ball. Both these guys have been very steady all year. Neither guy throws 90 but anyone who has seen them pitch know they are as tough as anyone out there and there has to be some consideration for the "gamers" who just get it done day in and day out.

so those are my guesses - Jones or Hamlet could get POY (worthy seniors) and Scheetz and McQueen could get 2 of the 4 district pitcher nods..... and Lowrey will assuredly be coach of the year.

But I don't get a vote.....
I agree that Casey Jones and Christian Hamlet appear to have had a great year..I know Jones has had some clutch hits, and Hamlet has been on fire as the season progressed. I assume it will be someone from JR or Cosby, with someone from Cosby having the edge due to their record. I'd love to see Kit Scheetz get the top pitcher award, the way he filled in and pitched almost flawlessly his first several games was amazing. I don't think any pitcher has gone through the season unscathed at some point, so he should have as good a shot as anyone.

For POY I'll offer someone probably far under the radar: Connor Bastaich from Midlo..(full disclosure I'm a Midlo fan). Midlo has won 6 games this year after going winless last year, and they had opportunity to win 3-4 more. Connor has been the main reason for that, very steady and dependable all year playing SS great and hitting in the 3-hole. I don't know the stats but I think he's around .400 or better with many key hits. If he's not the POY, he's certainly the MVP in my book. Connor probably won't get much consideration for this playing on Midlo and there are several very good players who are having great years also, but I hope he gets some consideration for the district teams, and gets credit for his contribution to getting Midlo back to being competitive.
I'll take a shot at this hornets nest. I've seen more than an handfull of games but I'm sure there are players who had better numbers than I imagined but I am confident that these kids are worthy for sure. I also realize that it's pretty heavy on JRHS and Cosby kids but the talent is where the talent is.

I like your picks for the most part...for the 2nd team, I'm not sure about Florence and Kirby..I know Florence pitched some very good games, but I also think he had some not so good games in the beginning..I'm not sure Kirby threw enough games to be considered, i think he only pitched in 3-4 games, but I'm not sure...I have no doubt he is the best pitcher around, but based on number of games i would question it...i would submit Conner and Birnbaum for 2nd team pitchers, and I think Connor Bastaich is very worthy of 2nd team SS.
I agree that Conner and Birnbaum were very good on the mound this year - but I felt that they were also so valuable as wveryday players that they warrented the Utility spot.

IN any event, Bastaich is definitely worthy if it goes that way. Ditto for Carpenter.

I also left out the DH position which is usually a safe place to plug in a kid who really shined at the plate.

So your favorite player I failed to mention can just be plugged in there :-)
