On the last day of regular season, James River took its only loss of the year, falling 4-2 to L.C. Bird at home. Karl Morris put Bird ahead to stay with a third-inning homer. Matt Laney finished a 4-year varsity career with a complete game tightrope act, allowing 10 hits and 15 baserunners in all, but stranding 13, as JR struck out 10 times and repeatedly failed to deliver the clutch hit.
Laney's next mound appearance will be wearing an East Carolina Pirates uniform next year, as the Skyhawks, expected at the outset of the season to be a contender, finished 6-10 in district and well out of the playoffs. A.J. Prill took a tough loss, suffering 2 unearned runs that gave the winning margin as he again substituted for Daniel Marrs, who will return for the playoffs after resting through a mild bout of shoulder tendonitis.
Cosby had the easy win over Huguenot, finishing 12-3-1 -- a surprising second place for a school without a senior class in its opening year.
Wythe was idle, having finished its season on Tuesday.
Still awaiting the outcomes of Clover Hill at Midlothian and Manchester at Monacan. Those games will determine the # 3 and # 4 seeds, and thus, the matchups for Tuesday's semifinal games.
