The only two remaining undefeated teams met at Midlothian, with JR's junior southpaw Austin Stadler (Baseball America's # 31 junior) squaring off against Midlo's Tyler Wilson (Perfect Game's # 156 senior).

Midlo struck first with one run in the 2nd when JR failed to execute a relay on a makeable play at the plate. Wilson was awesome through 5, with 10 K's and only 1 hit with no runs through that point. Fastball was 90+ and the curve is special.

JR broke through for 2 in the 6th to take the lead, getting a key 2-out hit to come from behind. Midlo sent Wilson back out for the 7th though his pitch count was already 105. After two infield, seeing-eye hits and an error, he left with the bases loaded and no outs. Reliever got shelled and it ended up 7-1.

Wilson ended up 6+ innings, 5 runs (4 earned), 5 hits and 12 K's. Stadler came out after 6, 1 run (earned), 4 hits and 6 K's.

James River remains undefeated at 7-0 overall, 5-0 in district. Midlo falls to 4-1 in district, so that JR is now in sole possession of first place while Midlo falls into a tie with Manchester for 2nd.

L.C. Bird was idle, while Clover Hill and Manchester got the gimme wins vs. Huguenot and Wythe. Results of Cosby at Monacan not yet known.

Chris Briere has also emerged as an outstanding closer, finishing 5 consecutive games for James River, 5 2/3 innings without a run and averaging about 2 K's/inning. We can pull our starters BEFORE they get tired and vulnerable because Briere's been so "lights out". Midlo apparently did not feel they had that luxury yesterday. We barely scratched against Wilson until he got close to the 100-pitch mark. Even then it was more scratch and claw stuff, not exactly lighting him up.

Hopefully that'll work for us against Clover Hill on Tuesday, too, because Sean Tierney is waiting for us in that one.

The last district game yesterday saw Cosby beat Monacan, 8-1. Cosby continues to amaze at how they are overcoming their having no seniors. Ronnie Shaban is having a great year on the mound and at the plate; complete game yesterday, and a HR that I think was his third (at least) of the young season.

With L.C. Bird suffering with some injuries, lack of pitching depth and apparently just being in an overall team funk, Cosby is definitely in contention for a playoff spot along with the district's other surprise team, Manchester.
