Huguenot High, the only Richmond City school remaining active at the varsity level in baseball in the Dominion District (after George Wythe dropped to JV level play), has suddenly announced that it will not field a team this spring.

This is disappointing on several levels. First, Huguenot had shown tremendous improvement over the past two years. Although it could not compete with its county rivals, it routinely beat other city schools in non-district games. Huguenot also had a player play in last June's Tournament of Stars on the Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities (RBI) team. So the folding of the program is a major disappointment.

Moreover, since VHSL only allows 20 regular season games and most everyone else has already booked up their schedules, the 7 remaining Dominion teams are now looking at being stuck with regular season schedules of only 18 games. Many are reportedly scrambling to try to identify private schools who would be willing to add one or two more games to their schedules.

Private schools looking for opponents may want to contact the coaches at:

James River
Cosby
Midlothian
Manchester
Clover Hill
Monacan
L.C. Bird

As these 7 teams all have room to add 2 games to their schedules at this point.

Would the powers that be in the Dominion District consider allowing the teams to play an extra game against two of the other teams in the Dominion in order to get their maximum number of games in? Obviously it's not an optimal solution, but maybe they could designate those games as non-district games for the purposes of district standings just as a way to be sure all teams have a full schedule. That really stinks though...while there are probably no tears being shed by the top teams about not having to play an inferior team, you would think a little more advanced warning would have been possible.

Advance notice would have been nice for the teams losing games. But I have to feel for a school that can no longer field a varsity baseball team. Perhaps Huguenot gave it a go and realized they just didn't have the players to put forth a bona fide effort on the field.

I think there are schools in Northern Virginia that aren't far behind, as far as an inability to field a semi-legitimate varsity baseball team.

Maybe VHSL should entertain the idea of Richmond City schools combining to form teams.
