Remember in deciding interference it depends on distance from the bag, assuming R1 doesn't do something intentional. If he is a fair distance away there is no reason he needs to alter his path. If the fielder hits him when he isn't close then it should be nothing otherwise they would start headhunting the runner to get the other out.
Now if he is close or at the bag then he needs to try and get out of the way. Sometimes that's not posible and then you have to umpire.

If in the umpires judgement, R1 interfered with the throw

For all those giving advice, this is the important point....."in the umpires judgment"....a runner has no responsibility to avoid an errant throw....like MST stated, then the fielders would just plunk the runner to get the additional out....

in determining interference, we have to determine if the runner is doing something he is not supposed to do....this is why a lot of people who attempt to become umpires quit....it falls on your judgment...and you can read the rule book cover to cover, but if you cant make the tough call or accept the responsibility of determining ...then this job isnt for you.....
